I'm bummed that some people already took my picks for the cast but here is my list anyways- if they really were going to remake it today (which would be blasphemy- but I'll put that aside for this purpose):

I thought of a lot of actors who could play Andrew Clark but none as good as Brady Corbet- he looks the part and he's a great young actor. He might even do better than Emilio. I immediately thought of Michael Cera for the role of Brian and I see I was not alone. Michael Cera is basically the Anthony Michael Hall of today. Let's hope he doesn't get all bulked up and scary looking later in life. Paul Dano as John Bender. This was the toughest role to recast. I spent many hours thinking of young actors who could do it justice and I kept coming back to Dano. If anyone's seen "The Ballad of Jack and Rose" that's the Dano I was imagining in this part. I can't think of anyone else in the age range who would do as good a job with the material. Mandy Moore as Claire. Yeah, she's made quite a few crap movies but she's actually not a bad actress- she's at least AS good as Molly Ringwald- look at her in something like "Saved"- she was great. And you totally see her as the stuck up princess. Like her or not she's perfect for this part. Jena Malone as Allison (The Basket Case). I can't be the only one who misses Jena Malone. Where has she been? She is as perfect for this role as Cera and Moore are for Brian and Claire, respectively. Initially I was thinking Evan Rachel Wood because she does have an edge to her but the more I thought about it Malone just fits better. J.K. Simmons as Principal Vernon- man I'm pissed that at least one other person thought of it. I thought it was a stroke of inspired genius... still... he would rock that role. Finally, Christopher Maloni as Carl the Janitor. He's not only a great actor but he can be funny as hell (Anyone see "Wet Hot American Summer"?). Plus... it's always good when you can get Schillinger and Keller together again- a nice little nod to "Oz"- one of the best shows in recent memory.

I want to make this a movie with all teenagers playing teenagers. Well wanted to, Josh Peck is 19 or 20 and Amanda Seyfried is 22 but she's just amazing as anyone who watches Big Love can tell you. I would definitely update the movie, there's a weird sort of innocence to the idea of a group of high schoolers discovering pot in a library, especially since they're all white and suburban. I picked Will Ferrell to play the principal in his sort of Stranger than Fiction sad and serious way. Kevin Spacey I can just see as an awesome, scenery chewing, menacing/funny janitor.

Andrew Fleming may seem like an odd choice but I saw Nancy Drew the other day and was amazed at how well he worked the integrity of the books into a modern and entertaining story about a girl who always seemed kind of two dimensional before. Also he did Dick which was an amazing movie. The guy knows clever teen. Karen Lutz wrote Legally Blonde, which I love and a fabulous book called "The Bachelorette Party" about a party that goes off the rails and becomes probably the best night ever for these characters. They know girls and they know teen. I don't think The Breakfast Club could be as angsty as it was then, it needs to be more fun and peppy, with kind of a mordant black humor. Earnest doesn't really work right now.

As much as I love the themed responses I wanted to take a stab at this as if they really were going to remake it because unlike the impossible to remake "Ghostbusters" some jerk will definitely try to redo this one.

Zac Efron (High School the Musical) - Andrew 'Andy' Clark (The Jock)

Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Superbad) - Brian Ralph Johnson (The Geek)

Scott M. Foster (Greek) - John Bender (The Criminal)

Leighton Meester (Gossip Girl) - Claire Standish (The Princess)

Zac Efron has the look and enough athleticism to pull off “The Jock”. No young actor is geekier than McLovin himself. While “Greek” isn’t exactly WB material Scott Foster has that Judd Nelson-like charm where he can be hilarious and snarky one minute then a moderately tough guy the next. Leighton Meester has proven on “Gossip Girl” that she can be “The Princess”. Kristen Stewart is definitely an overflowing bucket full of crazy and can clean up too… Perfect. My favorite bit of casting is putting Judd Nelson in the role of the principal. The irony alone is great, but he proved on those USA and Lifetime movies that he’s old and creepy enough to fill the giant shoes left by 80s icon Paul Gleason. Frankly, if Judd Nelson is too busy filming a Saturday Night Sci-Fi Original then I want Paul Gleason back. Carl the Janitor was either the hardest character to cast or the easiest depending on how you look at it. I would have loved to just plug Bill Murray in there so he could play Carl (the Greenskeeper) Spackler moving on to his second career, but if someone were to actually make this you know he wouldn’t be involved. On the other hand Mr. Bruce Campbell would definitely be able to fit it in between those awesome Old Spice commercials.

Since I posted so late some of you had some awesome ones that I had to avoid.

Kudos to Mercurial for Blake Lively as The Princess and Nora Zehetner as The Crazy. Good one also to Leeroy711 for Lacey Chabert.

This remake is a film where 5 individuals are locked in high school library after a school shooting, where they must confront both their inner turmoil and the social cliques of high school. Having had an about face ref The Breakfast Club in the last couple of years when someone suggested that it's a blue print for social change in which the romantic pairing of the Cheerleader and the Jock.... and the Thug and the Arty Girl have simply been switched so now it's the Cheerleader and the Thug and the Jock and the Arty girl.... which of course begs the question what is in it for the nerd? simply he won't get beat up.... as much.... so long as he covers for everyone and completes the groups work.... I think the only true way to recast this film is the Gus Van Sant way, get a couple of non-actors off of youtube or myspace and let them loose....

Brady Corbet (Funny Games) fits perfectly in the All-American Jock stereotype. Jay Baruchel (Almost Famous) plays the geek better than most. Mark Webber (Stroytelling) is a genuinely disaffected youth. Blake Lively (The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants) looks like a prom queen. Nora Zehetner (Brick) could definitely pull off the fragile, awkward loner. Paul Giamatti (Sideways) will bring a touch of class to the production as the irksome school principal. Scott Bakula (American Beauty) has that wisdom-spouting man with a mop quality that would be perfect for the janitor.

Okay, my choice for Andy is pushing 30, which is old even by John Hughes standards (I calculate that one human year is approximately equivalent to 1.35 Hughes years), but I can’t imagine anyone but Ben McKenzie in that role. Also, I’ve avoided, and would challenge everyone else to avoid, inclusion of any “Juno” cast members (even though J.K. Simmons would make a great Principal Vernon). It’s sort of like The Strokes covering Velvet Underground’s “There She Goes Again”. Finally, I always felt that the prettification of Ally Sheedy was one of the original film’s serious missteps. Hopefully my choice of Allisons renders that somewhat implausible.
