Well now that it's over, I guess I'll chime in. My idea is to recast this film with characters from other movies. Meaning, new actors, playing the Princess Bride character as a character they have allready played in another movie. This would probably be the worst movie ever so.............. here it goes

It was insanity trying to choose one winner, so we chose two:

- ElCid2002 (aka Mike): For creating a rock solid recast and knocking the extra credit points--writing some Samuel L. Jackson dialogue into the movie--out of the park.

- And benthams_head who is unstoppable. Not only did benthams_head put up three posts, but the Robert Altman Allstars Edition is truly inspired. Elliot Gould as Westley, Shelley Duvall as Princess Buttercup, Jeff Goldblum as Vizzini and Tom Waits as Miracle Max? Wow. Wow. Wow.

I want to hand all participants a metaphorical cigar, though. Very fun stuff to think about.

Okay, I believe that if the infamous powers that be (a.k.a "they") were ever going to re-cast a film like the The Princess Bride, it should be done with a completely Latin cast. The film's narrative lends itself to having an almost magical realism quality and Latin actors would be phenomenal in bringing to fruition this larger than life tale of love, betrayal, friendship and destiny.

Alright... so I was originally going to go the obvious route and case Ryan Gosling and Ellen Page/Amy Adams in the leading roles... but how much fun would that be?

I'm going to change up the screenplay a bit as well. After Wesley leaves, he isn't just gone for a few years, he's gone for 50 years. Even though Buttercup has completely convinced herself that Wesley is dead, and has been married for 50 years and become queen, she is still in love with Wesley. Her whole life has become a longing of what she thinks is a memory. However, the events of the movie play out and when a very old Pirate arrives and she discovers that he is Wesley, one of the most emotional and beautful moments in movie history occur.

I won't be casting a young Wesley and Buttercup, instead the film would use footage from the original to portray young Wesley and Buttercup. (Just the scenes until Wesley leaves, then it'd cut to the older leads...)I realize the film quality would be different, but I think that'd add to the charm of it. This old time of love was so far in the past for the 60+ year old Buttercup, that the film quality would just further emphazise this.but if need be Robin Wright Penn and Carly Elwes could be put through a ton of makeup and CGI to fill in any small gaps that might need to be filmed for the screenplay to work... but here's what I've got for the cast... (note, Montoya, Fezzick, Miracle Max, etc wouldn't be older... only Wesley, Buttercup and Humperdinck would be old...)

As for the Grandfather and Granddaughter (I'm also giving the Savage role to a female)... the Granddaughter isn't nearly as young. She is 17-18ish, but she is very cynical. She is so caught up in technology and modern life, that she finds the idea of this fairytale ludicirous. She is very smart and popular, and being stuck in bed sick is killing her. She starts of the movie texting on her cell phone, but the Grandfather takes it away leaving her stranded without any distraction)

This week, we're recasting The Princess Bride (1987). It's a classic that would be a travesty for some money hungry Hollywood exec to try and remake, which is exactly why we're imagining a remake. I hope a new cast comes out of this that makes me salivate for a remake, but I predict this will be an exercise in imagining how bad a remake of this movie could screw up.
This is a FIlmspotting contest and a winner will be announced on the Filmspotting podcast April 18, 2008.
Extra credit goes to anyone who casts Samuel L. Jackson and rewrites a classic Princess Bride quote just for him.

There are a lot of great casts here...IF we mixed and matched a few, we might be able to make a watchable remake...

I think Micheal Clark Duncan is the perfect Fezzik..kudos to those who nailed that one...

I also like Giamatti as Vizzini...It's a good fit...

And Julie Lous Dreyfuss as the Ancient Booer seems like a no brainer in hindsight...Good Call there as well!

As for the Indie version Cast...How do you cast an indie version of this flick without at least one of the brothers Wilson?

This is a blast I'm glad I started playing along...Can't wait for future recasts.

In most roles, I wanted to see what would happen if we started mixing up genders. I saw Channing Tatum as a perfect 21st century swashbuckling hero, with veiny deltoids. I saw J G-L as a great counterpart, physically - less bulky but an equally strong presence on-screen. I needed a powerful, beautiful, charming woman to counter Channing, and Gretchen is my choice there.

Lucy Liu has played the Inigo roll throughout her career; why not again? Same with Tilda Swinton.

The rest of the secondary characters are really just my favorite comedians.

And I thought Britney being a boo-er, the midieval equivalent of the paparazzi, would be a really nice gift to her.

This week, we're recasting The Princess Bride (1987). It's a classic that would be a travesty for some money hungry Hollywood exec to try and remake, which is exactly why we're imagining a remake. I hope a new cast comes out of this that makes me salivate for a remake, but I predict this will be an exercise in imagining how bad a remake of this movie could screw up.
This is a FIlmspotting contest and a winner will be announced on the Filmspotting podcast April 18, 2008.

Changed the grandfather/grandson into the female persuasion because that seems like the thing to do nowadays in remakes. I may be out of the loop, but there was something telling me that Aniston would be perfect for the part of Buttercup. Bardem could nail Inigo and the Rock showed me in Southland Tales that he can play a gentle, moronic, slightly off-kilter nice guy giant. The only one I really had trouble with is Vizzini and I'm still only 90% sure of Stiller, but whatever. As for Jackson, I have two rewritten quotes (the first referencing his gratuitous use of the f-word and Pulp Fiction):

Miracle Max: Have fun stormin' the castle!

Valerie: You think it'll work?

Miracle Max: It would take a motherf**kin' righteous miracle!

or the other (with reference to The Long Kiss Goodnight)

Miracle Max: You got any money?

Inigo: Sixty-five.

Miracle Max: I've never worked for so little. Except once and that was a very noble cause.

Inigo: This is noble, sir. His wife is . . . crippled. His children are on the brink of starvation.

Miracle Max: Are YOU a rotten liar.

Inigo: I need him to help avenge my father, murdered these twenty years ago. I assume you can help me.

Miracle Max: Everyone knows, when you make an assumption you make an ass out of "u" and "umption".
