Wow, it was hard to pick a winner, but it’s frozenhamster for his 4/20 post--

…England is about to get slimed! When ghosts get a passport to Europe they take London by storm and it's up to a special team of British parapsychologists to save the city. Killing ghosts and making jokes, all before tea time.”

Steve Coogan (24 Hour Party People) as Peter Venkman, Simon Pegg (Hot Fuzz) as Ray, Martin Freeman (Tim on the British Office) and Nick Frost (Hot Fuzz) as Winston. Besides being a really fun idea, I like it because it’s its own thing and doesn’t try to “replace” anyone, especially the inimitable Bill Murray.

I'd also like to mention lazyalchemist's post. I especially liked imagining Rainn Wilson (The Office’s Dwight) as Egon, Michael Cera (Juno) as the male student, and Alan Rickman (Sheriff of Nottingham!) provide the voice of Gozer. I can see Vince Vaughn doing a pretty good Peter Venkman, too. You’ll notice that Vince was the popular favorite for Venkman.

I’ve got to salute some others:

smcassidy also went with Vince Vaughn for Peter, but he followed that with two perfect sucker punches: Jerry O’Connell (Joe’s Apartment) for Ray, and David Duchovny (X-Files) as Egon.
Luis Guzman (Punch-Drunk Love) would make a great Winston (thanks LMCBoy).
Keira Knightley is a surreal and inspired choice for Gozer (thanks PlantPage55).

And mercurial, I may have less faith than you do in the Broken Lizard (Super Troopers) comedy team, but these are good picks.

In Bergman’s Ghostbusters, the plot is the same, except that when the team is confronted with Slimer during the hotel sequence, the Ghostbusters become existentially horrified by his existence and give up ghostbusting in a deep spiritual confusion. Ray and Winston turn to alcoholism and the church. Venkman and Dana’s love affair is abandoned when she is driven mad by the haunting and is committed to an insane asylum. The rest of the film follows Egon and Janine’s unrequited romance, culminating in her climbing to the roof of the Ghostbuster headquarters to commit suicide. There she meets a sobbing Venkman, where, wordlessly, they join hands and hurl themselves to their deaths. The climax is an extended conversation between Louis Tully and Walter Peck on the human need to explain the unknown through superstition. Here we learn Gozer was Tully’s childhood sweetheart who died of lead poisoning while working a summer job at a locksmith’s. The film ends with the two men opening the door to the containment chamber, which is revealed to lead to the bedroom of Dana Barret’s apartment. They spend the silent final scene of the film trying to reassemble the broken eggs on her kitchen counter. Also, there are no jokes and all the ghosts are metaphors.

Oh. My. God. This is freaking brilliant! I laughed myself silly.

Clearly, this is a matter of taste, but I think all the actors below are either way too under the radar in general, or not thought of as the comic geniuses that they have the potential to be:

A few notes: Though Bill Murray’s shoes are large and intimidating, I have faith in TV actor Josh Randall. His guest-starring turn on “Scrubs” proved that he can do dry humor incredibly well (with an impeccably furrowed brow), while his work on “Ed” proved that he does incredibly physical comedy (for proof, try tracking down the slo-mo pancake eating scene). He carries a seriousness-through-absurdity that would fit so nicely, and his role as one of the Tailies on “Lost” proved range. For a foil, there’s Peter Dinklage. He gets credit as a serious actor, but despite being brilliantly funny in “Elf” and “Entourage,” he hasn’t had the opportunity to carry a full comedic role. This is a wrong that cries out to be corrected.

Louis Tully must become Louise, as Judy Greer would be genius in this role. Whatever that means – whether lesbian crush or just loneliness – is a detail we’ll work out later. As for Janine, Ginnifer Goodwin does sardonic like nobody’s business.

Most people associate Paul Adelstein with his creepy turn as a government agent on “Prison Break.” I associate him with the most amazing single line reading in the Coen Brothers’ “Intolerable Cruelty”: “Everybody eats berries!” (Check the DVD extra.)

Jeffrey Wright is probably better known for serious work, but anyone who’s seen Angels in America knows how well he can work a room if he has to. And poor Rebecca Romijn wants so badly to be considered a comedic actress, let’s give her one more shot…..

Could a remake of Ghostbusters (1984) ever be worth watching? It's especially hard for me to imagine recasting Bill Murray.

Found while visiting another dimension:

History can only guess what might have been when Saturday Night Live alums Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd were to team up for "Ghostbusters," a hot sci-fi comedy that was initially set up at Columbia. Following the death of John Belushi, Aykroyd dropped out of show-biz, effectively shelving the project.

After an executive at Columbia was quoted on certain scenes in "Ghostbusters" being "a tone poem of New York," a succession of directors known for their love of the Big Apple vied for the chance to helm the film.

First, up Woody Allen took a shot at a rewrite and submitted his casting ideas to the studio:

Behind the scenes, studio bosses were hoping for this to be a return to Allen's earlier, funny films, but it was not to be. When one exec was quoted in Variety that Allen's draft had "fewer laughs than 'Interiors,'" the writing was on the wall.

The attention of Woody Allen gave "Ghostbusters" some prestige among Hollywood's A-List, and yet another director known for his New York films took a crack at it. Martin Scorsese attempted a draft with "King of Comedy" scribe Paul D. Zimmerman, and drew up his own casting ideas for the studio:

While still toiling in rewrites with Zimmerman, Scorsese came across Joseph Minion's script for "After Hours" and decided to tackle that project instead.

At this point, "Ghostbusters" languished in limbo with a reputation as an unfilmable project, having been rejected by two of the most acclaimed directors in the business. The last nail in the coffin occurred in 1987, when Spike Lee, hot off his film "She's Gotta Have It," was being courted by every studio in town, including Columbia. While in production on "School Daze," Lee toyed with the idea of updating the "Ghostbusters" script to suit his own vision. Here's my reasoning: Owen Wilson as Peter Venkman because he's the only contemporary actor I can think of who can pull off that Bill-Murray-esque charming humor. I can totally see him as the goofy womanizing Venkman. Kevin James as Ray because he's funny but he's also the kind of dumpy regular guy like Dan Aykroyd. Jason Bateman as Egon... come on- can't you see it? Slap some glasses on him... yeah. He's actually a great actor and he's funny- he could pull it off. Diane Lane as Dana Barrett- I struggled with this because I thought Lane, at 43, might be too old for the part since Sigourney Weaver was 35 when she played the role but as I considered other actresses I just couldn't come up with a better choice than Lane- and I think her chemistry with Owen Wilson would be great. I chose Donald Faison as Winston because I really could just see him in the character. I was considering Kal Penn as an alternative but Faison seemed the better choice. David Cross as Louis. I just love David Cross- he's got the glasses and the nerdy thing going on. Someone else here had Linda Cardenalli as Janine Melnick and I agreed instantly that she'd be perfect so I had to put her. I picked Anna Faris as the female student because she's gorgeous and she does the dumb blonde thing so well. John Heder as the male student because he seems like the kind of shmuck-y guy that Venkman would screw with. George Segal as the mayor just because he seems mayoral and reminds me of the original actor. Milla Jovovich as Gozer because she can be one scary chick. I don't have a pick for Gozer's voice. I think Jovovich could do it herself.

I thought long and hard about this all week and concluded, quite simply, that it can’t be done. It’s the re-casting equivalent of dividing by zero or George and Jerry trying to pull off the roommate switch. So, since it’s impossible to improve on the original, we might as well degrade it.

Imagine, if you will, it’s 1995 and Jerry Bruckheimer has approached Michael Bay and Roland Emmerich about co-directing a blockbuster “Ghostbusters” remake for release on July 4^th weekend of the following summer. A clever ad platform has already been designed with tons of product tie-ins, including the Taco Bell/Mountain Dew “get slimed!” campaign with a cross-promotional link to the fledgling world wide web at get-slimed dot com. Oh yeah, and Will Smith has already been signed on to do a rollicking hip-hop version of Ray Parker, Jr.’s classic theme song (and if you guessed that he dances with Slimer in the music video….you’d be right!)

Also, speaking of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, I think a Real Genius-era Val Kilmer would really rock in the Venkman role. Talk about a perfect smart-ass!

I was thinking High Fidelity/Gross Point Blanke John Cusack. A little darker Peter Venkman, but still hilarious. And Robert Downey Jr. might outshine Cusack on screen but I could not think of a better over the top bad guy than Robert Downey Jr. Like a less witty, less like-able version of his character in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

The cast of Broken Lizard would play the Ghostbusters with Jay being the token person of color (just like Ernie Hudson was) and Steve fitting perfectly in the Rick Moranis part of Tully. Marley Shelton (Sin City) has that sweet, sexy, yet possibly psychotic quality about her like Sigourney while Linda Cardellini (Grandma's Boy) has a way with the sarcastic undertones in everything she says like Annie Potts. Bill Paxton plays a panicky asshole like no other and Lee Majors (The Six Million Dollar Man) will have the token classic television character appearance (like Linda Carter did in Broken Lizard's Super Troopers) as the Mayor. Geoffrey Arend ("The schnozberries taste like schnozberries" kid in Super Troopers) will play off Jordan Ladd (Cabin Fever) perfectly in the psychology experiment scene. And Gisele as the freakishly tall and attractive mega-bitch Gozer with the raspy crack-whorish voice of the incredible Amanda Plummer (Pulp Fiction). Lastly Brian Cox with a digitally altered voice as Zuul and Slimer will be pretty much the same except for the fact that he makes "meow" like noises when he's eating.

This should be a fun recast, be lets be frank this movie will be remade. With special effect breaking new ground every couple of years, and studios treading over familiar ground makes this a perfect storm for remaking.
