Worst Movie Ever

I just looked up box-office numbers for that one, and I think the pathetic returns and terrible press are probably vote enough to get it on the list :-}

i did like it as a post-guy ritchie eurocrime romp, but Ill cede overrated. it's not really "best of the year list" good, and it's probbaly being done a disservice to be built up like that.

I realize some of you may disagree with me on this, but I just saw In Bruges for the first time and borderline hated it. I posted in the Top 5 group in the Overrated Films thread, and felt it deserved mention here for 2008. Can anyone tell me why anyone liked this at all?

I was told that I *need* to see this film because of its sheer brilliance, but I can't see any brilliance whatsoever. Colin Farrell had his funny moments, but I found the rest of the film disjointed, filled with gaping plot holes (theres a dead guy laying disembowled in the square, guys shooting back and forth forever in a long foot chase... and no cops... really?), and it seemed the imagery was all supposed to be 'deeper' and 'more meaningful' that it actually was. I found the movie trite, pandering and trying to construct a false pretentiousness it couldn't live up to with its shallow plot.

I feel much better now.

So without quoting every post in the thread, let me join the Speed Racer lovers. If you didn't like the looks of the trailers, you weren't going to like the movie. If you just sit back and let it go on it's terms, it's pretty dazzling. You can see where it's huge budget went; I think it might be too densely plotted and visually busy for kids and too off the wall for grownups.

I'm also going to defend I Know Who Killed Me. I actually liked the look; sure the plot was kind of hogwash, but I have seen far less entertaining films, even if I wouldn't actually describe it as good. I may go easy on it because Art Bell cameos must be savored, but I think it came out at the height of the LiLo-bashing trend, when it could have been freaking superb and still have been dumped on like it was.

Worst of '08? Mark Wahlberg had a pretty rough year; The Happening's hilarity has been well documented, and Max Payne was worse; it was boring. Have I missed Righteous Kill being mentioned? DeNiro and Pacino have both been in such a slump the last few years their collaboration meant little to me; Righteous fit right in with the subpar policiers they've both taken to. While there were probably many "worse" movies to come down the pike, were there many that were more dull or depressing?

I couldn't get past the trailer...

Well in most cases I would chide you for judging a movie just based on the trailer without actually seeing it, but in this case I'd say you pretty much know exactly what you are going to be getting with the movie after watching the trailer.

I guess I put more weight on movie promotion than i should. Truth be told, most of the movies on that list are ones that I haven't seen from 2008. I know, I know, shame on me. But really I had no interest in seeing them based either on poor promotion, ridiculous subject matter, or reviews from reputable sources. So, on the one hand I feel kind of bad, but on the other I think Hollywood needs to step it up in terms of quality, I'm not going to go out and spend $9 on a ticket unless they can convince me and my movie critic sources that it is something worthwhile. I'll wait until it's on video, or when I go to visit my Dad who loves bad movies (he thinks they're good).

Ah, I tried to forget about that one. I didn't see it, but I don't think I really need to. Audiences across the US sent a pretty clear message on this one... I think it may actually replace Jumper for my nomination.

My first nomination:

worst picture: Jumper
worst screenplay: Jumper
worst actor/actress: Hayden Christensen

The plot was the only thing worse than Hayden Christensen's acting (or lack thereof). It wasn't even bizarre in an intellectually challenging Pi or Donnie Darko sort-of-way. It was just ridiculous, and somewhat pretentious when it had absolutely no right to be. This is one of the very, very few films that I could not stand to watch to the end.

Well I wouldn't say Bangkok Dangerous was a bad movie... but you could certainly nominate Nicholas Cage for worst actor in a fairly decent movie. Disaster Movie is too easy to pick for worst movie of the year. Its almost as easy as calling Bush the worst president ever... I will have to think longer, but I'm sure I have an opinion on this... last year I Know Who Killed Me made it Soooooooooo Easy....

I think Disaster Movie is a good choice since it was a spoof that forgets to actually spoof and just recreate stuff from other movies. Also doesn't make fun of disaster movies but just recent movies we have seen. I think they were more concerned about the poster than the film they made.

worst picture - Funny Games, because it was useless! Haneke should have known better than ruin his own best film! worst screenplay - Dark Knight. Yeps, everyone hates me for this one, but it was a complete muddle. I would've not paid the screenwriters. Along with Sex and Ther City. worst actor/actress - Keira Knightley, simply because she's always ghastly! Edward Norton as Hulk!!! Hulk!!!! worst soundtrack - High School Musical 3. No. 1 When is it ever going to end? and second, we certainly don't need any more pop dribble!
