Hands Down the Worst I have Ever Seen
Worst Moive Ever - Excellent list!
Without a doubt this is the most inane piece of drivel I have ever seen. The first time I tried to watch this gem I fell asleep (and typically I can't buy a nap). Of course I had to give such an excellent ensemble, and Terry Gilliam (director), the benefit of the doubt and watch a second time. I made it through - but just barely; this film is torture! And that is from a Hunter Thomspon\gonzo journalism fan. I really wanted to like this, but it was horrible.

I'll have to disagree on this one; the first half hour to hour is just hilarious and classic Johnny Depp....after that though I usually fall asleep.

Oh come on, are you for real? Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas is the worst movie you've ever seen? Although I can't say it is a favorite of mine, or all that memorable of a film for that matter, it definitely has a few good moments in there that I think can definitely pull it out of the Worst Movie Ever category.

Re: Hands Down the Worst I have Ever Seen
Alright finally some controversy here. Fear & Loathing is probably one of those films on the bubble for me. Like Mac said, the first 30 minutes are great. When he starts talking about the whole ether thing I just about lost it, but to be honest by the end of the film, I was the one left feeling like I was on some drug induced hangover.
I'm not sure at what point the film lost me, but at some point the film does seem to break down into a non-sensical plot. While I know that part of the movie was it's irrational nature, I'm still going to vote guilty of being a movie that you shouldn't rent.

Re: Hands Down the Worst I have Ever Seen
OK Kami, I will concede to you and to "Mac" that this movie had a few (very few) funny moments. Still makes the worst ever list for me however - maybe it was the high expectations, maybe it was the fact that it put me to sleep. I would rather have my eyes 'clockwork oranged' and be forced to watch anything or everything with the purple dinosaur in it than see this one again.

Re: Hands Down the Worst I have Ever Seen
Davis, I think you nailed it when you said you felt like you were coming out of a drug induced hang over after watching this. I could not have said it better myself.
Honestly, I don't see any reason why this film should be in the worst movie ever category.
I really felt as though Gilliam did this movie right. Johnny Depp was the perfect choice for this film, no one could have portrayed Hunter S. Thompson that well, he's got the look and attitude of the gonzo journalist down cold. I liked everything about this movie, from the acting to the special effects (like the scene where Raoul sees the pattern on the carpeting transform into creeping vines HA HA HA) to the location choices (especially Circus Circus, it has a quirky atmosphere that matches the mood of the movie).
This movie doesn't have a very deep plot which is why I think a lot of people don't like it or understand it.
Its all about the drug culture of the 1960's and Hunter S. Thompson's crazy chaotic mind.
Now that I am thinking about it, I haven't seen this in a while, I think I will buy it!

"We can't stop here. This is bat country."
This is definitely one of those polarizing films that people either hate or love. I personally think it is a great film, worthy of any DVD collection (I own this one) and I do agree that the film does tend to unravel half way through, but I believe that was Gilliam's intentions. The film lures you in with the funny dialoague and weird visuals and before you know it, you're trapped in this crazy, hedonistic world that Thompson resides in. Of course, you feel like you have a drug hangover at the end of the movie. That's exactly how you're supposed to feel.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is definitely one of my top ten favorite movies of all time. Possibly even within the top five.
I'm not sure what you mean exactly when you say it doesn't have a very deep plot. It has some pretty deep themes. It's not just about the drug culture of the 60's, in fact Raoul and Gonzo are pretty unusual characters, not really your standard 60's hippies. But they are observers of a world where that hippy culture came crashing into a wall. Where a culture of peace turned into the Vietnam War. Listen to some of the voice over narration. There is some really poignant stuff in there.
And it's funny as ***.

Re: Hands Down the Worst I have Ever Seen
See? Now I have to watch it.
Not sure why, but I'd rather see a movie people disagree about, than one everybody agrees on. Why is that? Does that mean I really only want to see three-star movies? Because that's the average rating?
Hmm...
I think that's true, because I almost always find that the movies I love the most have been given 3 stars by most of the ratings engines.
Hmmm....

Re: Hands Down the Worst I have Ever Seen
It makes sense. I think most people with a real interest in movies, all kinds of different movies (probably a lot of people who would be interested in a site like this) are not going to be most interested or satisfied by just the movies that the general public or big critics are all going to love and agree on. I think a lot of people like that have favorite movies that are really original and different in certain aspects. If the movie goes all out and you feel some interest or affinity for whatever kind of origional thing it's doing, it will be your favorite, but if you don't connect with whatever original thing it's doing, you will hate it. Most of the time I'd actually rather hate a movie, than find it mediocre. If you catch my meaning.
