Directed by Ryuhei Kitamura
Evil Dead 2 meets Street Fighter by way of The Matrix in this wild and woolly zombie/yakuza/samurai/kung fu/splatter flick directed by Ryuhei Kitamura. Throughout the world there are 666 portals to the other side; the 444th is Japan and is called the Forest of Resurrection, where good has battled evil for time immemorial. The film opens with prisoner KSC2-303 (Tak Sakaguchi) and his fellow cellmate escaping a maximum-security prison and ending up in the forest where they are supposedly to be picked up by a band of gangsters in a shiny Mercedes and taken to a safer place. Instead, the gangsters try to use them and a female hostage (Chieko Misaka) as pawns in a larger power struggle. A gunfight ensues killing KSC2-303's colleague and the mob boss, but just as the standoff is about to yield more violence, an odd thing happens -- the dead get up and attack the living. In the chaos, KSC2-303 and girl disappear into the forest with a band of slickly coifed yakuza in hot pursuit. High-kicks, machine guns, and rampant disembowelments ensue. This film was screened at the 2001 Toronto Film Festival. ~ Jonathan Crow, All Movie Guide

"It seems like it happened when nobody was looking, the return of the zombie film. They’ve been popping up all over the place. Heck, even the local Cineplex 47 near the mall has been showing ‘em. Great news indeed. Especially for all of us who’d prefer to see the fat zombie on that abandoned boat in the harbor get shot again… rather than resigning ourselves to " [More]

"You ever see Versus? I recently caught up with this movie about a forest which brings the dead back to life as zombies. There's also something about excaped criminals and these two warriors who have been battling for centuries, but it's all just an excuse for people to shoot a lot of guns and swing a lot of swords (the mixture of gunplay and swordplay is not something you see all that often, but it " [More]

"If you are looking for a fun Japanese zombie flick, check out Wild Zero. It's a crazy movie full of the living dead doing battle with Japanese rock. If you want to go even further off the chart look up Sars Wars from Thailand. It's definitely not for everyone because it's so silly, but that's wh " [More]

Combining elements from virtually every genre considered cool by 14-year-old boys worldwide -- from the kung fu spectacular, to Japanese anime, to zombie horror flicks -- Versus is a meta-B-flick. Featuring a gritty, kinetic style that recalls early Sam Raimi, Ryuhei Kitamura showcases virtually every trope and convention from the trash cinema throughout the world: motorcycles, outlandish guns, cool hair, souped-up samurai swords, and more decapitations than the French Revolution. The result may be chaotic -- characters often enter the mix for no clear reason except to create more mayhem -- but always a treat to watch. One reason is that Kitamura only rarely lets his frenetic editing obscure the action of the film. Another is performance, which, aside from Kenji Matsuda's constant mugging, is uniformly engaging. While the film might not make sense in places or speak to tragedy of the human condition, Versus is a hoot and holler of fun. ~ Jonathan Crow, All Movie Guide
