Vampyr ranks in many circles as one of the greatest horror films of all time. Inspired by Sheridan Le Fanu's Carmilla, the story concerns a mysterious series of killings, committed by a crone of a female vampire (Henriette Gerard). The story is told through the eyes of a holiday reveller (Julian West), who at first scoffs at the notion of a supernatural murderer, but who is eventually forced to believe that there are more things in heaven and earth. Dreyer offers few explanations of the phenomena he presents on screen: the strange and frightening happenings just happen, as casually as any everyday occurrence. As was his custom, Dreyer mostly uses nonprofessionals in his cast. Vampyr is available in a wide variety of severely edited and duped versions. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

"The idea for this analysis came to mind when I recently saw Bergman's The Seventh Seal. While I was not quite as blown away by the film as most accolades of the film would suggest, I still found it to be an excellent movie, and could see very clearly the influence it has had on so many films that have come after it. The one scene that I especially noticed a direct legacy in later films wa " [More]

"What a difference a print can make. For years Vampyr was only available on DVD in lousy transfer from a substandard source material. The Criterion Collection's new print made me feel like I hadn't seen the real movie before. It's one of Dreyer's great works. Like the films that would precede and follow it, The Passion of Joan of Arc and Day of Wrath, Vampyr is more of "experience" movie than the traditional narrative horror picture, although the DVD commentary informs me that it w " [More]

"This vampire movie does not have any of the elements that I like so much in adaptations of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Dreyer attempts spirituality, but (oddly) this time he fails. The idea is that the vampire tries to get his victim to " [More]

"[quote user="Risselada"] Gor, I was wondering if you've ever seen the old silent French film version of The Fall of the House of Usher. ... [/quote] I haven't seen that one yet but it certainly looks interesting and I have added it to my list. Thanks, Rizzo! I have a passion for the old silents and have several in my collection. One of the earliest I have " [More]
