"This is the first film I've seen by director David O. Russell. Three Kings Attempting to fit drama, comedy, action, history, ensemble, and politics in a movie can sometimes succeed, but like any movie, if the comedy, action, or characters are not particularly appealing to me then it doesn't matter how much you try to fit in there. This movie was interesting enough to me for one watch. And the history lesson about some of the less publicized facets of the larger events surrounding Operation Desert Storm in this country was worthwhile. But one watch through was enough. Actually three was way too much, but I have a compulsion about watching DVD extras. If I rent a DVD, it's because I want to expose myself to this movie for a particular reason. Even if I don't like it, I want to figure out what the deal is with it. Thus I forced myself to watch both of the commentary tracks here as well. After this film, and hearing David O. Russell's commentary, I do not find too much particul ... " [More]

"The Democratic National Convention is over, and all the ecstatic party members have left Denver to go back to their zombie-esque lives (Bob Hope said it, not me). But after four days of celebrating what it means to be a Democrat, some may not wish to settle down and calmly wait out the next two months until Obama’s (possible) win, let alone the next five months waiting for the candidate to (possibly) be sworn in as President, participating in the normal non-specifically-Democratic, non-self-congratulatory activities that most of us are content with. So, one thing excited Democrats can do is watch movies that will continue to inspire and encourage their beliefs and politics. As Karina already wrote, The American President is one movie that just barely may allow Obama fans to relive his DNC speech. Also, beginning yesterday, the Oscar-nominated documentary No End in Sight will be available in full [More]

"This afternoon I watched Jarhead. Hmph! Jarhead is not a bad movie, it just suffers from it's subject matter. It wants to be about something, it thinks the Gulf War was about something, but it wasn't. All that pseudo-philosophical rhetoric about a marine and his rifle and the desert and still being in the desert even after you come home and who else but a marine will see the stuff they saw in the Iraqi desert. It's the kind of writing that college kids write. It sounds really smart the first time you put it down, but later it shows up as shallow (kind of like my filmblog posts). The best part of this movie is the scene where the marines are watching Apocalypse Now. I was just as disappointed as them when it was abruptly switched off. This movie is not Apocalypse Now, it is not Full Metal Jacket, it is not Three Kings. It is a desert of a movie. " [More]
