"I have always tried to maintain low expectations for Hollywood product in general. But when it comes to highly anticipated movies, particularly blockbuster sequels to popular sci-fi action franchises, my excitement can get the best of me. Whenever I need to calm down my expectations, though, I simply recall all the disappointments of 1997 (Alien Resurrection, The Lost World, the Star Wars Special Edition), and I can get through the hype pretty safely. Considering I’m one of the few who actually loved both Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines and (yes, even) McG’s Charlie’s Angels movies, it’s hard for me to believe that I’m also one of the few who isn’t now expecting Terminator Salvation to be the second coming of Christ [More]

"Bailout talks implode, leaving economy’s fate unresolved, Chavez reaffirms Russia alliance during visit, Pirates seize ship carrying tanks, ammo. Just click over to CNN.com or any other news site and you’ll see why post-apocalyptic and doomsday movies seem more relevant than ever.  The doomsday scenarios in movies can be pretty outlandish, but some of them are actually plausible. After all, in world where pirates have tanks, Hollywood doesn’t need to stray far from reality for a good yarn. Below the jump, we put five doomsday movie scenarios to the plausibility test. If you’ve always secretly thought Waterworld was a work of dead-on global warming prophecy, read on. [More]

"Titles in bold represent a first time viewing. 346. Magnolia (Anderson, 1999)----------I thought that this was a pretty great collage-type film with the likeness of a more familiar title, Crash. Aside from Julianne Moore's performance, one of the few things I didn't like was the fact that the characters didn't connect with each other other than the bizarre finale at the end of the film. (7.5 / 10) 347. Stuck (Gordon, 2007)----------Based on a true story, stuck follows a wannabe-ghetto woman (Mena Suvari) after she hits a homeless man and drives him into her garage. The acting was terrible, the premise was good though. Towards the end, it began to pick up in terms of entertainment. (6 / 10) 348. Equilibrium (Wimmer, 2002)----------Christian Bale? Sweet. Reviews relating it to The Matrix? Awesome. This is why I initially c " [More]

"McG and Bryce Dallas Howard, “This is our new baby, we named him T-600 McG-Dallas-Howard.” The world of Terminator fandom let out a collective groan when the news was announced that McG, director of the Charlie’s Angels films, is at the helm of the upcoming Terminator Salvation. The film, the fourth in the more than twenty year-old franchise, stars Christian Bale as John Conner. Bale unfortunately did not join the rest of the cast in promoting the film at Comic-Con. There was a press conference immediately following the big announcement panel, and the star of the show, surprisingly, was director McG. When asked about the overall feel of the film, McG said, “I’m tremendously influenced by Children of Men, hat’s off to that picture, I think it’s fantastic… By the same token, this isn’t designed to be an art picture, it’s for audiences the world over, so you’ve got to find a balance between that artistic take and what’s right for a film to be seen by a great many people around the wor ... "In the Terminator series an advanced computer system called Skynet makes a spontaneous leap from AI to full-fledged intelligence, which endows the network with a will and opinions of its own. This concept was considered science fiction until today, when google revealed its horrendous prejudice: If we expect google to be an ethical entity it must be held accountable for its moral shortcomings. However, google has already proven it doesn’t only mean us harm. Do a google image search of “belongs in prison.” The first person to appear is Chris Elliott. I thought this was a mistake–how could the man behind Cabin Boy belong in prison? So I asked google web search to clarify, “does Chris Elliott really belong in prison?” The first complete sentence on the page made its answer crystal clear: “Of course he does.” I don’t know how google knows this, but let’s get a warrant first and ask questions later. We don’t know how many lives it could save. Originally posted on:SpoutBlog

"10/10 people. I was not expecting to be blown away by anything with a Sundance seal of approval. More often than not, Sundance endorsements are about quirky people patting other quirky people on the back and telling the rest of us we're idiots for liking Terminator. I do have an artsy fartsy streak, and I admit I'm a sucker for music-oriented films. Hell, I love That Thing You Do! How many grown men admit that?! Once feels like real time. It has a deliberately slow pace allowing the music and lyrics to tell a lot of the story. (not too slow -- it's not even 90 minutes) And please, fellow rockers, don't panic at the cover. Sure this is singer-songwriter territory. I have Lars Ulrich on my desktop wallpaper, ok? Some Kind of Monster is a work of genius. But this music is flat out good. I mean really, really good.Boy meets girl, boy very fond of girl. Both are lonely and at crossroads in their lives. Both are trying to determine if they're reboundin ... " [More]
