"The mood and character set-up are pretty good here and there are certainly some nice scary parts. However, what I think totally sinks the film is that director Bertino never sets up a good sense of space. About halfway through the film I realized I had no idea where the characters were in relation to the house from one scene to the next. They seemed like they were in this very big house, but we only get to see like two or three rooms in it. Then, a barn is introduced halfway into the film that it's not clear how far it is from the house. I lost track of where Tyler and Speedman were in each scene and thus lost interest in their predicament. But, still didn't totally dislike it. More like a missed opportunity. " [More]

"This review of "The Strangers" contains spoilers. Proceed at your own risk. "The Strangers" is a perfect example of the current problem with horror movies: the need to humanize the "bad guys." With the recent reimagining of "Halloween," not to mention the latest installment in the "Saw" series…and the latter "Nightmare on Elm Street" flicks and a dozen other recent and classic horror films, writers tend to give our masked killers a backstory, a reason for being the way they are. It is to the film´s great advantage, then, when the end credits begin to roll, we´re not left with antagonists abused as children, born into backwoods families or having experienced any other type of trauma. When Kristen McKay and James Hoyt (Liv Tyler, Scott Speedman) retreat to his parents house following a wedding-and presumably a fight-they are soon stalked by three masked strangers. I´m shocked at that simple log line. Really, I am. There is nothing more to "The Strangers." ... " [More]

"For some reason, I thought The Fall was a foreign film. It's not. It's just a beautiful, tragic story of a little girl in the hospital and a young man who tells her stories while they heal. Only it's way more. It broke my heart. I cried and laughed and enjoyed the visual delight of the stories. See it.A classic sci-fi film, The Day the Earth Stood Still, is about to get the remake treatment. This version has a polite, well-dressed alien in the form of Michael Rennie ("Assignment Terror"), trying to save the Earth from itself. The movie gives an interesting look at how an outsider might see our world. It also shows how humans are easily led to distrust what they don't understand, outsiders of nay sort. I hope the remake can capture at least some of this.I really loved Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Jason Segel ("Knocked Up") stars as a musician who's actress girlfriend dumps him. Then he goes to Hawaii to try to get over her, only she's there, too. It's sweet sometimes and seems like a ... " [More]

"Crack, craSHH, scream, click. Good sound design. Is that it? About it. Not sure if this was some Funny Games copy gone awry or an honest attempt at box office penetration, or both. The first act is really cool, the relationship stuff and how the plot points are delivered in a kind of choppy flash forward / flash back / etc way that works. Yet after that the pic deteriorates into the genre norm minute by minute, cut by cut.Lord, I gotta say one thing - Liv Tyler has never looked more beautiful on film and plays a great damsel in distress.Round the end we get to see hints at the true identities of the intruders. By that time I was bored and looking at the clock. Effective thriller for the middle-expectation filmgoer thrill seeker.** / ***** The Strangers (2008) Funny Games (2007) " [More]

"I'm not sure where to begin, this representation of a factual event is pointless. If you want to write a movie based on true events, then use the true events you have. However, as scripted in the beginning of the film, there are no stories or facts ever recorded. So instead lets make a drawn out low budget "horo-medy" about, one of 5,000 ideas of what could have happened. Of course under the influence of a hallucenigen, I may have really enjoyed these special effects, you know the flaming car, the perfectly handwritten letters on the windows, oh and lets not forget the ingenious masks they wore, wow thats an easy halloween costume for next year. The sub par acting distracted me from this true masterpiece, or maybe it was the film as a whole that distracted me from my life. At times it was hard to see because most of the film took place in the dark, Mr. bertino, feel free to apply to a film school and learn how to shoot film at night. Instead of an afternoon holding my girl close so ... " [More]

"It was a total waste of my time and money. I have seen better acting in high schools plays and more scary scenes on Scoby -do cartoons. There was no explanation of what was going on or no ending. Who told the story? Who was the one calling 911 in the beginning.? Did they catch the intruders? " [More]

"From the first preview I saw for The Strangers, I was excited to see this movie. It appeared to be a return to a simple, desperation, terror around every corner, sort of horror flick. The movie did not dissapoint. The Strangers revolves around a couple who've gone to a secluded house for what was supposed to a be a romantic get away. As the two start to sort through their relationship issues, they receive an unexpected visitor...at 4 in the morning. From that very first knock on the door I, and everyone else in the theatre, was on the edge of their seat anticipating what was coming next. The very few lines that were spoken by the aggressors were absolutely terrifying. As the film unfolds, we find that the young couple are being stalked like wild game by three masked aggressors who seemingly have no intent to let them leave alive--as well as know motive for any of their actions. The thing that is incredibly disturbing about this film is that the actions of the three masked capt ... " [More]

"Expecting a romantic evening alone, James (Scott Speedman) and Kristen (Liv Tyler) are unexpectedly thrust into a torturous game of hide and seek when a band of marauders appear on their doorstep. Undoubtedly influenced by the oeuvre of the Charles Manson "Family" and the events that led to the death of Sharon Tate and three others, The Strangers is surprisingly chilling in its depiction of a couples desperate attempts to overcome a seemingly omnipresent cadre of killers bent on fulfilling their murderous urges. Ultimately an unnervingly candid depiction of the motivation behind such brutality with the horror magnified by the rudimentary mask of the male intruder and the deadened eyes of the females kewpie doll visages. "Hear that? That is the sound of countless Botox-enhanced faces within the film industry simultaneously stretching to a smile after the opening weekend of ‘Iron Man.’ As everything else in these current economically shaky times, the film industry hobbled into 2008, weakened by a writers strike and sagging returns. Who would have thought Robert Downey Jr. would be the one to save us from this mess? But in he flew (granted, he was playing a character by the name of Tony Stark, but really, what’s the difference?), cracking $100 million in its first weekend alone. Of course, studio execs are quick to point out all the ‘firsts’ and “biggests’ for the fi " [More]
