"It’s quite convenient for Warner Bros. that Time magazine, a fellow Time Warner subsidiary, has been able to break the review embargo on Watchmen. Though (geek blogger and Simpsons executive producer) Matt Selman acknowledges the embargo, he neither considers himself press nor his post on Time’s Nerd World blog a review. Still, his gushing write-up, in which he avoids discussing plot points and attempts to steer clear of technically labeling the movie good or bad, has stirred up some controversy regarding what constitutes a review and what is permissible during a review embargo. I’m sure that Warner Bros. would have no problem quoting Selman in ads for Watchmen, so the studio should consider the post completely equivalent to a film review. Now, thanks to the controversy surrounding Selman’s apparently planted “review,” the inevitable Watchmen backlash hath begun. Fark.com headlined its link to Selman’s piece in a way that presumed the highly anticipated graphic novel adaptat " [More]

"In the new movie Eagle Eye, three characters participate in a re-creation of the famous crop duster sequence from Hitchcock’s North by Northwest. Only the plane from NbN has been replaced with an electrical tower and power lines, and it takes Shia LaBeouf, Michelle Monaghan and Anthony Azizi to perform Cary Gran’t part (Azizi also substitutes for the pilot and the farmer, I guess). Such an homage is not surprising coming from director D.J. Caruso, whose last picture, Disturbia, is currently involved in a lawsuit for being an uncredited remake of Hitch’s Rear Window. This time, fortunately, Caruso borrows enough from other films, including Hitch’s second version of The Man Who Knew Too Much[More]

"When I first saw the trailer for Wanted, I figured it was just another Matrix ripoff. And I’m sure there are many other people who thought the same thing. Of course, some Matrix ripoffs aren’t bad — I absolutely love Kurt Wimmer’s Equilibrium, for example — but most are. Even worse, though, are the parodies of the Matrix’s “bullet time” sequences. Do we really need to see another movie character bend over backwards to avoid a bullet (or milk)? Or another movie character suspended in motion while the camera tracks around him or her? It’s no wonder that until yesterday, I had pretty much dismissed Wanted, because of that Matrix-like bullet time sequence in which Morgan Freeman shoots around a slab of meat to hit an unseen target. Yet as of yesterday, the movie’s [More]

"Another bit of exciting news from Jason Bateman [again via MTV Movies Blog] regarding the Arrested Development movie: “the ball has started rolling down the hill again.” Okay, so it’s not too exciting, nor is it revelatory in the least, but at least he says all the creatives are on board. Meanwhile, the actor also commented on his role in the American movie adaptation of the British TV mini-series State of Play, which, combined with MTV’s other post about the American TV series remake/adaptation of the British TV series Spaced, has me putting a little thought into the subject of theatrical spin-offs ve " [More]

"TronI remember that episode of The Simpsons where Homer asks if anyone has seen the movie Tron. Everyone denies it except for Wiggum (who actually denies it twice and then confirms it and then retracts again. Oh believe me, it's funny). I'd seen short clips of the movie, but never watched the whole thing. My friend Noah was wild about it though, and when I was visiting him on my vacation last Spring he had me and my other friend Adam watch it. Ok, yeah the effects look pretty horrible by today's standards. Although it does still look totally different from anything anyone would conceive of today probably. I actually kind of like it for it's effects. But the rest of the story is really bad. Really goofy. I'm sure many disagree. But maybe as The Simpsons seems to think, not that many people have seen it anyways. Or they are too embarrassed to admit it.Rating: 6/10 " [More]
