"Both are broadly classifiable as science fiction, but Alien is basically a horror flick and Aliens has all the conventions of a war film. That’s a pretty slick transition from one type of movie to another, especially since the switch was so immediate within the series. Most movie franchises don’t play with genre in such a way until they’ve gone through a number of sequels, and even then the series usually just simply takes its characters into outer space, a la Moonraker, Jason X and Leprechaun 4. Genre jumping isn’t that easy, though, unless a franchise inhabits a whole universe in which to expand through. Like Star Wars, for example. Originally a film series, the Star Wars franchise spread out into novels, which has allowed " [More]

"Out of all the cinematic staples, the so-called “magical negro” is the worst to define and discuss due to it being the mother of all loaded terms. A catch-all phrase used to describe how African-Americans in film tend to be superhuman physically, spiritually or both, it’s currently in the midst of the pop cultural zeitgeist thanks to a crappy song and New Year’s faux-pas. Anytime someone sees a black character used as a story tool in a film — in the case of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Queenie (Taraji P. Henson) originally didn’t exist in Fitzgerald’s story — there is a mild cry of “There! There! I see a magical negro in the distance! Yes! There!” One should wonder why Eric Roth deemed it necessary to suddenly introduce the character as a fra " [More]

"I love this movie the way the sound mixed in with the horrific emotions not knowing what is going to happen next. I read the book by stephen king nad it was totatally different than what the movie was offering in which it was fine by me... SCARED the hell out of me. To Stanley Kirbick his vision of this story was SHOCKING, it gave you a feel of fear being unmeasured by his genius. " [More]

"Sometimes the criteria I use to judge a great horror movie isn't just it's inherent quality, but how much it effects my day to day life. There are a small handful of horror movies that didn't just define how I watched movies, but actually informed the way I live my life. Taking that in consideration, probably one of the most, if not THE most, important horror film in my life would have to be Stanley Kubrick's version of The Shining.A lot of purists, and Stephen King, hate what Kubrick did with the movie, arguing that it changes just about everything from the book, but then I'd like to enter into evidence the completely crappy remake that Stephen King went back and did in the 90s. I forced myself to sit through it, and as a result put Mr. King on my personal shitlist for the better part of a decade. I was that offended by the movie.Now... I have to make an admission here. A statement so blasphemous that my 'cool film buff' status may be revoked by the cul ... " [More]

"The leaves are turning, the air is crisp, it could only mean one thing: the time is now for the best Simpsons episode of the year, The Treehouse of Horror Halloween Special. They’ve done a good job this year of building buzz, especially around the portion of the episode that spoofs Mad Men. The episode airs Sunday, November 2, and 8 pm on Fox. In the above video we get a glimpse of the segment’s title, How to Get Ahead in Dead-Vertising. This is fantastic news: it means that the piece will be properly ghoulish, and it also means that it may not be only an homage to Mad Men, but also to the classic 1989 advertising satire How to Get Ahead in Advertising. In that film, a successful ad executive suffers from a horrible boil on his neck. One day he wakes to find that the boil has developed into a fa " [More]

"After much deliberation, I have created a comprehensive list of my current 30 favorite movies ever made. I am still debating about it in my head, considering there are still so many more movies that I want to include on it. However, I widdled it down to 30. I'll reveal them periodically over the next few days, with my absolute favorites (1-10) having long explanations, and then after that getting shorter and shorter. Here's numbers 21-30 with brief explanations.21. The Shining Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece of horror is in my humble opinion the scariest film ever made. I have never seen anything that has contained as much suspense and as much sheer terror as this movie. And while I usually don't like the genre a whole lot, I love this movie.22. The 40 Year Old Virgin/Knocked Up There was a tie here, and I figured I could group them together since it's the same crew. Apatow's movies have changed comedy, and both of these films are almost beyond hila ... " [More]

"As we were watching The Messengers, a friend of mine said “I think I’ve seen this before.” My response was, “You probably have. It’s been released under about a hundred different names over the past five years or so.” Now, I’m not sure she has seen The Messengers before we watched it that Friday night, but I do know that it’s basically a copy of almost every other PG-13 horror movie that has come out for the past half-decade. Here is how I think it works: Executives hire people to go though recent Korean / Chinese / Japanese horror films and have them pick out which ones they think could be the most “Americanized”. They then take out whatever actual substance and depth it could have because they think that teenagers will find it boring. To “spice” things up a bit, they add cheap, cliché scares such as a character turning a corner during an ascending ominous music tone only to have the music abruptly stop ... " [More]

"I love movies, obviously, and I love my home entertainment center. I love DVD(and, slowly, I will come to love Blu-Ray), and I love popping a disc into the player in the wee hours before I go to bed at night. But above all, I love going out to the theatre. I don't do it as often as I once did, or as often as I'd like. Partly that's due to the consequences of having an 8-5 job, a child, bills, and a healthy ongoing relationship. But it's also partly due to the changing theatre experience. And yet, despite the fact that theatre chains are charging us more for less, and all major chains now play television commercials and military propaganda advertisements-sometimes under the guise of an exclusive 'short film'- I will continue to treasure the theatrical experience above the home theatre experience. There's just something to be said for surrounding yourself with strangers in a dark room while this fantasy plays out in larger than life scales, knowing that for those few brief hours you ...
