"Planet Earth I'm sure most people are already familiar with this series. And I haven't met anyone who hasn't enjoyed it, much less thought it was one of the greatest things they've seen on a screen. On IMDB, Planet Earth is the highest rated item in the whole database with over 3200 votes, and it's the highest rated item that isn't a video game with more than 150 votes. In fact the item with the most votes that isn't a video game and is rated higher than Planet Earth on IMDB is a film called Vishnu which has an outrageous score of 10.0 out of 10.0 with 114 votes. However when you consider the fact that it's a relatively new Indian movie that may have a cult fan base and hasn't been seen much out of India it's not anywhere near as outrageous as Planet Earth's score of 9.8 out of 10.0 out of 9,095 votes!!! Documentaries and TV series are exempt from IMDB's Top 250 list, but compare a rating of 9.8 with the current top movie on that list Shawshank Redemption with a score of 9.2. ... "

"I learned of this movie when someone told me it was their "all time favorite" skeptical, I rented it (knowing it was a prison film, I was worried that it would be lacking in plot, steeped in depth and realism, but lacking... structure,) However, I was gladly proven wrong. This film is a true work of "art" (for lack of a better word,) It almost absorbs you in, leaving you completely unaware you are viewing a movie. The acting is spectacular. Morgan Freeman & Tim Robbins are fantastic leads, but the "Villians" (again for lack of a better word,) were what truly gripped me, I really wanted to hate them, and felt quite justified when they got what was coming to them. Although it was brutal at points, it was a raw and completely honest film. Entierly enjoyable. 5 Stars! "

"(Note: This is actaully written as part of my newspaper review column, whose readers may not be as obsessive about their horror films as members of the Spout community, but I felt I would include it nonetheless) Let's face it, the current economic news is far more terrifying than any feature that can grace the big screen right now. For horror devotees, there's the never-ending “Saw” franchise making its fifth trip to the multiplex this weekend. And there is really only one other legitimate fright flick for it to contend with (and no, “Beverly Hills Chihuahua” and “W.” don't count). The film is “Quarantine,” which I will get to later. But first, may I suggest a few more economically friendly ways to get your scare on this season of the witch by suggesting some DVD titles that you may have overlooked.

"One of the many fads for cinephilic YouTubers, perhaps next in popularity after mashups and sweded remakes, is the condensed movie. Actually, thanks to a recent Empire contest, the art of sweding and the art of fitting features into a 60-second time frame is now also a mashed-up fad (though I guess sweding has always involved shortened versions). But while in this day and age any fanboy can do a shortened remake of his or her favorite movie or an abridged recut that breaks a film down to its bare essentials (i.e. its use of the f-word), condensing a film is not necessarily a low art. Just look at the 76-minute video Academy by R. Luke DuBois, a conceptual artist who works with both audio and visual mediums. A couple of years ago, using a time-lapse process, DuBois crafted this compilation of sped-up versions of Best Picture Oscar winners, which he says “allows us to explore the temporal, "

"Though I first buzzed about an Academy Award nomination for Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight more than a month before his death, I now want to take it all back. I feel all the talk of Ledger’s posthumous Oscar chances will cloud my mind when I finally do see it, and it will probably also cloud the Academy’s judgment, too. Six months from now, when the nominations are announced on January 22 (coincidentally the one-year anniversary of Ledger’s death), if Ledger is not recognized for his role as The Joker, there will surely be an uproar — actually, Hollywood might just up and self-implode. I’m not the only one annoyed by all the Oscar buzz. Terry Gilliam, who directed Ledger in The Brothers Grimm and the upcoming The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, is ca "

[What do you think?]
"This is not going to be one of those columns that goes into a lengthy diatribe about the influence on Dr. Indiana Jones had on this reviewer’s life as a child. I refuse to prattle on about owning a fedora and a bullwhip used to scare the bejeezus out of the family dog, or the backyard films created as homage to “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and the countless scars and bruises that serve as a testament to my inexperience and/or stupidity in attempts to replicate the adventures of the intrepid archeologist. It seems that the prerequisite in reviewing this latest installment in the Indiana Jones canon, “Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” has almost every critic launching into some wistful rant on its impact of his/her life. And while I am certainly one to appreciate the personal power of cinematic experiences, I think this self-indulgent therapy session approach is a tad tiresome now.

"I’m not usually into prison movies. Never been to prison and have no desire to go. I realize it’s a hellish place, and don’t find it particularly entertaining to watch a two hour fictional depiction of that despair & anguish. But this one is an exception. Tim Robbins stars as the wrongly accused (because how boring would it be to watch a movie where all the criminals were really guilty), and Morgan Freeman is the wise old lifer that befriends him. Morgan Freeman could give an Oscar-worthy performance in a commercial for feminine itch medication. Give him good material and he’s gold. And Robbins has proven time & again that he’s a much more talented actor than political activist. "
