"If Tyler Perry gets an Oscar nomination for his acting in Madea Goes to Jail, can a washed-up actress scold him for taking away female roles? Actually, could it just be Cuba Gooding Jr. in drag, a la Boat Trip? Seriously, though, Madea won’t be up for any Academy Awards next year, but damn is Perry’s character popular. Enough that the sassy matriarch has now evolved from a supporting character into the star of her own vehicle (which gave the filmmaker his biggest opening yet this past weekend). "Cool movie about a dude who would rather smoke grass then get a job. He witness a murder and then the murderer traces him. Director David Gordon Green did a very fine job from the charming and fun screenplay Even Goldberg and Seth Rogen. Seth Rogen, James Franco, Bill Hader, James Remar, Danny McBride and Gary Cole are all great in this movie. "

"Catherine Hardwicke hit one out of the park for female directors this past weekend, but she had a lot of help. Not only was she working with a pre-sold property, she also had a very manageable budget of $37 million. Quite different from the $2 million she had to work with on Thirteen a few years back. Of course, she had similar budgets on Lords of Dogtown ($25 million) and The Nativity Story ($35 million), and both were box office disappointments. Still, she’s going to keep on being trusted with more money — if Summit is smart they’ll keep her on for at least the first Twilight sequel, which will surely come with a higher price tag — and as long as she continues with genre films, she’s sure to remain a profitable director. Not every talented filmmaker does well with more money. Danny Boyle, for instance, typically bombs with bigger budgets. And a lot of foreign auteurs "

"The Pineapple Express is a mid-80s buddy action film as filtered through a haze of pot smoke. The characters are stoners, but after one of them witnesses a brutal murder, they're forced to run for their lives. As they evade the bad guys and the law, they bicker and fight, but eventually become good buds, ready to take on the local drug kingpin in defense of each other. It's not even remotely believable to watch these two go from pothead to action hero, and, were the film a better concoction, I might not have a problem with this. But the movie wants to have it both ways, wants to convince me of the characters' incompetence and then show them blasting away with automatic weapons, emerging victorious in fisticuffs, and etc.. The tone of this thing is so off-kilter; it wants laughs from looney tunes violence and sentiment from honest pain. Other films have succeeded in walking this line between comedy and tragedy--Midnight Run and Hot Fuzz spring to mind--but this one fails mise ... "

"I really enjoyed Pineapple Express. I laughed so much that I thought I would choke on my food. Sure, Seth Rogan ("Stepbrothers") yells a little too much, and, in a couple of places, the film drags a little. But over all, very, very funny. James Franco ("In the Valley of Elah") stars as Rogan's pot dealer to whom Rogan confesses he has witnessed a crime. The two then go on the run. I can't wait to watch this again. Live Flesh is a gorgeous film by writer/director Pedro Almodovar ("Volver"). Like many of Almodovar's films, sometimes the plot takes back seat to the colors and visuals on screen, but it doesn't take away from the film. Javier Bardem ("Vicky Cristina Barcelona") stars as a cop who gets paralyzed by a stray bullet. After the shooter is released from jail, he begins stalking Bardem's wife. And then it's weird and beautiful. See it.

"Well needless to say I was very excited to see another Seth Rogen movie. I was a little skeptical about James Franco not knowing if he would be up to the task. After seeing this movie I have to say I was very dissapointed with the movie. After seeing movies like Superbad and Step Brother, this movie does not hold a candle to it. There were funny parts to the movie and I am not trying to take that away. As far as the comedy and humor provided in the previous movies mentioned, Pineapple Express does not compare. It seemed as if they were trying to hard to be funny instead of letting it come naturally. I have not seen Tropic Thunder yet but have heard good reviews on it. Hopefully it will be better than this movie. Alot of reviews have said that this movie is on the list of one of the funniest movies of all time, and im sorry to say I just did not see it. I'm sure we will be seeing more movies from David Gordon Green but sorry to say this one was not as great as everyone claims it is. "

"The past two weekends have seen the release of two big, R-rated comedies, first Pineapple Express and then Tropic Thunder. Both featured stars who have, at least occasionally, dipped their toes into family friendly film waters and who have developed big followings across all age groups. Both movies marketing campaigns also featured red-band trailers. Others and I have discussed the role of the red-band trailer in the campaigns for R-rated movies. They are great components for selling the movies to their adult audiences since, as I’ve said before, they are able to more accurately portray the movie as a whole. If a movie’s comedy or drama depends on the use of coarse language or violence then it’s better for the movie to be able to present tho "

"At one point in "Tropic Thunder," the new comedy from writer/director/star Ben Stiller, co-star Robert Downey Jr. plays and Australian Method actor portraying a black southern soldier pretending to be a humble Asian rice farmer. And what's Ms. Greatest Living Actor Today, Meryl Streep, doing in the next theater? Oh, that's right. She's working on her tan, kicking it in the Greek Isles and singing ABBA tunes. Come Oscar time, if there is any justice, Downey would at least make the "For Your Consideration" rounds for his role as the uber-intense Kirk Lazarus. Downey Jr. treats his high-wire performance with such dignity and devotion that he spends almost the entire film in blackface without once seeming condescending or racist. But let us back up a bit, shall we? "Thunder" is not only a scathing little indictment on the film industry, but, minute for minute, one of the funniest films released this year, overcoming the third-act slump th "

"Trailer remakes seem to be all the rage now — the Dark Knight with kids clip I posted last month is getting a lot of mileage lately — and this week Indy Mogul premiered its parody of the full Pineapple Express trailer, for a fake movie titled “Banana Express.” Here’s the quick synopsis: a gorilla (Seth Rogen) and his banana dealer (James Franco) go on the run after the former witnesses a zookeeper murdering a fellow gorilla.
