"Are you one of the many sci-fi and comic book geeks who’d be more interested in Push were it not for Dakota Fanning? Sure, the precocious child star is now a teen actress (she’s about to turn 15), yet that probably makes you even more worried about her appearance in the movie. But what can you do? She’s literally everywhere this week – voicing the title character in the animated Coraline and starring in two new video releases, Hounddog and The Secret Life of Bees, both of which were released Tuesday. In the tradition of child actors continuing careers into adolescence, it’s only a matter of time before she ruins a movie that would have been better without her. We’ll have to wait until this weekend to see if that time is now, with Push, but in the meantime let’s take a look at some of the past offenders in this tradition. Most of the following "

"You know how I know you’re gay? You saw the Sex and the City movie. The above clip was made a few weeks prior to the opening of SATC, which has cemented itself into film history as perhaps the most chicky chick flick ever made. But I find it even more interesting (and more pointed than actually funny) after seeing the box office figures. I wish there had been some kind of tracking done over the weekend of how much of that money came, respectively, from women, from gay men and from - God forbid - straight men. Whether or not a heterosexual man has seen SATC is now officially a gauge of his manhood. Up there with liking beer, fighting, trucks, guns, chopping wood, etc. OR, in my honest opinion, up there with being comfortable with wearing a dress, putting on eye makeup, crying, giving another man a hug, etc. I have no reason to see SATC because I never watched the TV show, but I almost feel I should sit through it t "

"Now I love perverse, tortured characters as much as the next guy, but Sweetie's family is so overdone that I nearly stopped watching. What Campion achieved with The Piano, was at least slicker and more polished if equally disturbing. It feels like her mission is more to titllate than to fascinate or to expose irony. And where is hope in this movie? For just a few moments, you think that protaganist Kay, flat affect and all, will actually loosen up and turn vaguely normal, but, alas, it's just a tease. Sweetie is just too weird to countenance...yet colorful in a grotesque, unbelievable way. And as for Mom and Dad... If people like this actually exist and reproduce, the world is a more dangerous place than I'd ever considered. "

"The Painted VeilMaybe I'm crass, but I found Edward Norton's distain for his wife to be more convincing than his love. It felt like the breaking of a woman by a vengeful man. The Piano comes to mind right off, but this film lacks the confusing sadism of Harvey Keitel which becomes a deep and passionate love. It's that twist that never comes. He is made a saint of sorts instead. Fanny and Alexander has that cruel husband as well. There are lots of them in film. Once were warriorsEd Norton is almost grateful for the opportunity to be cold, not cruel. He makes her feel like her life has no value and her situation is completely desperate. It's a pretty f'ed up situation. But I enjoyed it well enough. I think it was well acted. I like Naomi Watts because there is something broken about her appearance. She seems already shattered somehow and I'm intrigued to find out what's the matter with her. That made the opening of this film seem a bit of a stretch. I di ... "
