"I have a new theory about the films of Robert Altman. I have often read that he is "one of the greatests American film artists alive" , "a master", "and a genius". But I just realized that these statements seem to come from the same people. I think that Altman is actually more of a cult director. The people who like his movies really, really love them, but his movies don't seem to be huge among most of the cineaste public, aside from a few: M*A*S*H, McCabe and Mrs. Miller, Nashville,. I am not an Altman fan. His movies seem to be the proto-typical indie film hipsters of today. I do give him credit for inventing the multi-character, multi-plot thread that all come together- Magnolia, Haggis's Crash that seems to be popular with that crowd. There is also an element of smugness to Altman's work I don't like: he seems to take the directoral attitude that cooler than everyone else. I also don't like his visual style- lots of choppy cutting and uncessessary zooms. The zooms wi ... "
