This first film version of Eden Philpotts' play The Farmer's Wife was directed by
Alfred Hitchcock. The story involves a roughhewn widowed farmer (Samuel Sweetland) in search of a new bride. Every candidate for the "title" proves insufficient, either because they fail to meet the farmer's exacting standards or because they want no part of him. Eventually the farmer realizes that his "perfect" mate has been under his own nose all along. The Farmer's Wife was remade in 1941, with
Basil Sydney in the lead. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
