"Because there’s nothing like waiting until the last minute to do some holiday shopping, we’ve compiled this handy-dandy shopping guide to the best DVDs of 2008 that you can use now, or wait until the dust settles and clean up with any cash that Santa or Hanukkah Harry happened to leave you. It’s broken down by the person you’ll be shopping for to make things easier, even if that person happens to be yourself. When noted, we’ve picked the Blu-ray version over the standard definition, because we try to be all about 1080p and other technical terms whenever possible. But, the regular versions are just fine as well. Still, it’s true what they say: once you go HD you’ll never go back. The Superhero Fan Iron Man: In my opinion, this was a much better movie than The Dark Knight. Why? Bec " [More]

"For some reason, I thought The Fall was a foreign film. It's not. It's just a beautiful, tragic story of a little girl in the hospital and a young man who tells her stories while they heal. Only it's way more. It broke my heart. I cried and laughed and enjoyed the visual delight of the stories. See it. " [More]

"This is the first movie I've seen in years where I was completely enthralled from start to finish. The Fall is also by far the best looking movie I've ever seen. Catinca Untaru is perfect and the least "actorly" child actor I've ever seen (which is a very, very good thing.) While the story told here by Roy (Pace) is not a very good narrative, it serves its purpose well; after all, the "epic" isn't really the point. The psychology behind the characters and the relation of the child's imagination to real life is the real meat here, and I loved every minute of it. " [More]

"The Fall (2006) is one of those movies you’ll either love—saying it is a wonderful flight of a child’s fancy—or detest—saying it is a vanity project that may look great but has no substance. It depends how you react to the two stories. The framing story is of two hospital patients in Los Angeles around 1915. The young man is paralyzed from a fall on a movie set, has lost the love of his life, and would prefer to kill himself with an overdose of morphine pills. The five or six year-old girl fell from a tree and has her arm in a cast. He starts telling her a story he makes up on the spur of the moment. I found the little girl charming, but her Romanian accent and some dubious audio made it difficult to catch some of what she said. Some people would find the guy off-putting because he injects a morbid note to a light-hearted story and he manipulates the little girl to get him morphine tablets. Neither of these bothered me. However, I felt little for him b ... " [More]

"I just got back from "The Fall". This is its first day in wide release (which means one theater in Chicago), I had been looking forward to it for months now. "The Fall" met my expectations and gave me a new look at movies and the world. That is really kind of a lame and formulaic intro, but I need something before I can get into the real review of this extraordinary film. The trailer alone recalls to one the quotes you see on the DVD box of a movie. Quotes like 'visually arresting' 'a masterpiece' 'visually stunning' 'fantastic' and the like. But you really have no idea until you see the movie and then also know that everything in it, all the locations all the costumes et cetera, are 100 percent real. Suddenly you are seeing the world a new way. The visuals are something I really do want to talk about. But the only real way to describe this movie in particular is to see it yourself. It is so off the charts of anything ever seen before that to see the whole thing is the only way. ... " [More]

"As the Toronto International Film Festival draws to a close, we talk with Karina Longworth and Kevin Kelly about their experience. The Coen Brothers’ new film Burn After Reading gets a mixed reaction, apparently it’s better if you get to see it with Adrien Brody. Brody’s new film, The Brothers Bloom, by Brick director Rian Johnson, is one of Kevin’s favorites. The Fall, a lush surrealist epic directed by Tarsem (yes, he only goes by one name), is out on DVD. Adam and I mull it over, comparing it to the 1973 campy classic Zardoz, starring a half-naked Sean Connery. Lastly, I interview Michelle Byrd, executive director of IFP about Independent Film Week, taking place in New York September 14-1 " [More]

"As I mentioned back when I reviewed the film’s trailer, I will be seeing Tarsem Singh’s The Fall for the eye candy alone. But now Roadside Attractions has unveiled a clip from the fantasy drama (via Yahoo!), and there’s not one bit of that sweet, delicious spectacle I crave. Fortunately, the scene actually works for the film because it has none of the flashy visuals. The young actress here is terrific, seemingly working off her costar with a combination of innocence and improvisation (the miscommunication at the end is priceless, whether it was off the cuff or scripted that way). It gives us a sense that this isn’t a film only for the eyes, but is also for the heart, as in a Cinema Paradiso or (2008 Sundance-winner) Captain Abu Raed or something. In fact I kind of wish the man in the scene was a much older fell " [More]

"Call me crazy (again), but I really like Tarsem’s debut feature, The Cell. If I had any complaints, though, it would be that there wasn’t enough visual stimuli. I’m sure others would have preferred a better story instead, but I have a greater appreciation for those films that are primarily meant to be looked at, and not as much followed. Favorites include Terry Giliam’s The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, Julie Taymor’s Titus and Zhang Yimou’s Hero, though I could probably go on and on. It’s an interesting affection coming from me, a guy occasionally inclined to criticize Hollywood’s spectacle-over-substance model of blockbustering. But I can’t help falling for a combination of beautiful cinematography and art direction. I shouldn’t, but I’ll even admit to enjoying [More]
