"It’s Halloween, a time when sales of candy and rentals of horror movies spike off the charts. Candy has been around since the time of the ancient Egyptians, but the horror film is barely 100 years old. The genre is enjoying a resurgence in popularity over the past several years: right now you’ve got Saw V in wide release, Let The Right One In in limited theaters, the vampy teen Twilight coming up in a few weeks and True Blood making waves on HBO. Studios can’t seem to go more than a few months without releasing some sort of a zombie flick, and vampires are coming back into their own. But what was the first real horror film? Before movies existed, people had to get their scares from books and the local newspaper, but now you can just switch on cable and tune into NBC’s Chiller channel for instant scares. Check out a brief history of the horror movie after the break, and look just how far we’ve come. [More]

"Back in 1999 The Exorcist was voted by entertainment weekly as the scariest film of all time. I have to say that even though it was made in 1973 it definitley lives up to that name. I was enthralled by every minute of this film. The beginning started off a bit slow, but because of that the film makers were able to develop the characters so well that when the horror does start you really feel for them. The horror is very memorable and visceral and leaves the viewer breathless. The direction and all of the performances are brilliant especially Linda Blair as the posessed child Regan. As a big horror fan I think it is safe to say that this is the king of all horror movies and for viewers that don't have a faint heart I will definitley recommend this classic! " [More]

"I saw The Exorcist for the first time last night, and while I was ready to have the tuna salad scared out of me, I thought it was pretty low on the fright-o-meter. There are definitely several "whoa" scenes where you can't believe that what's onscreen is actually happening, but that doesn't make it scary. It would definitely be terrifying to be in the same room with a possessed Regan and the paranormal activity that occurs is pretty mesmerizing, but that doesn't make it scary either. What stood out to me was the intensity of the exorcism scene and how well Max von Sydow played his part throughout the sequence. It was some hardcore, ghostbustin' ass shit with a devilish twist, but I wasn't nearly as freaked out by it as I was with Rosemary's Baby, which I consider to be a much better fil " [More]

"As for Hell Of The Living Dead being the worst zombie movie ever made I was sure I could top that one... The first one that leapt to mind was one I saw several years ago called The Child ... I found this one in my collection and rewatched it and I quickly realized one thing... this is not a bad movie at all! Working with a bare minimum budget and amateur actors working with terrible dialogue from amateur writers, these guys obviously spent all of their money on the few effective gore effects! Still, the overall effect is a rather creepy and suspensful zombie movie that was obviously heavily inspired by NOTLD with a little bit of The Exorcist and The Bad Seed " [More]

"Andrew Sarris may be one of the most influential American film critics, but here’s a claim, located within his recent review of In Search of a Midnight Kiss, that may not hold up to some of his better-remembered theories: “Even when we confront 40-year-old virgins of either gender, movies refuse to show them compensating for the lack of a sexual partner. There is lasting shame involved in this spectacle.” Not to ever, ever profess superiority over Sarris, but I’ve nonetheless compiled today’s list as a way of proving the man wrong. There are actually tons and tons of masturbation scenes found in non-porn movies, from the low brow to the high brow, from as indirect as the boy wizard playing with his wand under the covers in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban to as direct as the non-simulated masturbation in Michael Winterbottom’s 9 Songs and John Cameron Mitchell’s Shortbus (which would probably feature my #1 pick, from the sound of it, if I ev " [More]

"This was when Pacino (and De Niro,of course) never mind Bill"tThe Exorcist (1973)" Friedkin could seemingly do no wrong...Just imagine how "controversial" this was back in 1980!..the "deep cover" that the character embarks upon breaches a lot of taboo areas, and just think of how ,rightly or wrongly, the stigma of HIV hung over things...One abiding memory is how we joked about being careful NOT to let ANYTHING hang out of your back pockets. "I was 19 years old during the period of late '79- early 1980. And it is during that time that I wandered into a seedy, downtown Denver 'movie-house'. The only thing I knew about the movie I was about to see was the name on the marquee... "ZOMBIE"... I was STUNNED! This Movie Was PHENOMENAL! Up to this point, the 'goriest' movies I had ever seen would be "Night Of The Living Dead" and "The Exorcist" ... (I had not yet seen "Dawn Of The Dead" which was released the year before...) ... and some B-movie Drive-In fare like "Last House On The Left" and "The Toolbox Murders" and [More]

"The reputation of this film, all the hype at the time, and subsequently, the virtually guarenteed unnerving nature of it,just put me off actually seeing it ,for years...That poster with the figure of Max Von Sydow,in the lamplight, was burned into my retinas, the book, passed around at school, with it's black cover and heavy white typeface, became a disturbing icon.,and it had "Tubular Bells" for crying out loud! We were too young to go and see the film anyway,it was an EX(orcist) certificate,so i just avoided it really. I saw it on DVD just a few years ago,and was so glad i caught up with it.It's so good,so powerful and emotional ..the excerpt from "Tubular Bells" comes early on ,jarring with a bright autumnal "unsuspecting" leafy suburbia, The story of the Priest, his loss, his suicide? is so painful,so melancholic, but i dont remember things ending bleakly.A complete masterpiece of a movie. "This movie is pretty sweet for action fans. And for the girls that like to see a hot angel without a shirt. This movie is about a angel named ''Gabriel'' he has to destory evil dark angels to save lifes humanity. The one thing is kind of disappionting they use ''F''word to much thats kind of a drag. U may hate it or love it. But hey its a movie. " [More]
