"Teacher "Johnny Smith's" (Christopher Walken) life is perfect. He loves his job, and loves his co-worker/girlfriend "Sarah" (Brooke Adams). However, he gets involved in an accident which puts him in a coma. Five years later, "Smith" wakes in the hospital, and his life has changed. "Sarah" moved on, got married and is a full-time mom. And, "Smith" himself has gained psychic abilities which require him to touch the person he is reading. On the road to recovery from the coma, "Smith" gains some local fame. Like other psychics, the local sheriff (Tom Skerritt) comes to him for any leads in a serial killer case that he can find with his ability. He also has other predictions, and helps save those involved. However, things change when he crosses paths with a corrupt politician (Martin Sheen), and makes a decision to change his premonition about this man, who he sees in the Oval Office in one of his visions. "I remember seeing this on television when I was a young, young child. It totally freaked me out. Now that I've grown and viewed this again with a newfound respect for both Christopher Walken AND David Cronenberg, it seems to be the film that gave both of them their start. And what a start it is. Cronenberg finally seems to move a way (a tad) from his low-budget horror roots to something with a bit more...heft - much like some of his recent work (A History Of Violence & Eastern Promises). Walken plays it straight here, unlike some of HIS recent work (Balls Of Fury *barf*). Rarely do King's novels translate well to the big screen, but this is one of the exceptions. Cronenberg has just the right mix of humanity and horror, so as to make an unbelievable horror story into a believable suspense thriller. "

"For anyone expecting to see a David Cronenberg film filled with pulsating televisions, evil dawrves, or exploding heads this might not be the film for you. However, the Dead Zone is one of the ebst Stephen King adaptations yet, and it contains an amazingly eerie performance by Christopher Walken which for cult film fans, is worth the purchase price alone. All of this is not to say that it doesn't contain some of Cronenberg's telltale horrors. The few scenes of death/mutilation, are handled in his usual style, and the King/Cronenberg combo works like gangbusters. Much better than the King/Romero combo.Walken's Johnny is a man given special psychic powers after his emergence from a 5 year coma. Too bad, he doesn't want them. After experimenting with his abilities to locate a local killer, Johnny becomes disallusioned. Feeling his talents are more a burden than a gift, and longing for his lost love who married while he was comatose, he retreats into a life as a veritabl ... "
