"The Day The Earth Stood Still (1951) is a science fiction classic and in The Odyssey File, which featured correspondence between Arthur C. Clarke and 2010 director Peter Hyams, Clarke dubbed it the seventh greatest film of all time in 1983, one place ahead of 2001: A Space Odyssey, which Clarke co-wrote. A spaceship lands in a park in Washington D.C. An alien, Klaatu, walks out, claiming to come in peace and goodwill. As he approaches with a device in his hand, a nervous soldier shoots him. This causes the robot Gort to emerge and destroy all weapons nearby with its laser beam. Klaatu is taken into custody and held at a military hospital, Gort goes into standby mode, and the military attempt to get into the spaceship. Klaatu wishes to speak to the leaders of the world, but is told that can’t happen. "For some reason, I thought The Fall was a foreign film. It's not. It's just a beautiful, tragic story of a little girl in the hospital and a young man who tells her stories while they heal. Only it's way more. It broke my heart. I cried and laughed and enjoyed the visual delight of the stories. See it.A classic sci-fi film, The Day the Earth Stood Still, is about to get the remake treatment. This version has a polite, well-dressed alien in the form of Michael Rennie ("Assignment Terror"), trying to save the Earth from itself. The movie gives an interesting look at how an outsider might see our world. It also shows how humans are easily led to distrust what they don't understand, outsiders of nay sort. I hope the remake can capture at least some of this.I really loved Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Jason Segel ("Knocked Up") stars as a musician who's actress girlfriend dumps him. "This blog entry is part of my “movie year countdown”. To read more about that check out my first Spout filmblog entry.Born to KillI really wanted to see an old Lawrence Tierney film. Sadly my only exposure to him had been his comical role in The Naked Gun and his elderly but hardass role in Reservoir Dogs. Seeing the latter and hearing all of the stories about him from various sources made me want to see him in his younger days!I wasn't sure which movie of his to see, although I was a little hesitant about picking this one because it's directed by Robert Wise. Now I've only seen a few of his movies, and they are ok, but they just seem a little too tame and traditional in style to make me expect any more from him. The Day the Earth Stood Still, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, West Side Story. Criticize me if you want for not loving these, but they do not stand out for me.Howev " [More]

"Sleek, evanescent, shadowy, with a low-gloss platinum luster reminiscent of Wender's Wings of Desire, Kerry Conran's Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow is a grand ride, full of whiz-bang gimmickry and homage to the glory days of retro-Science Fiction. An attempt to refine, fulfill, and exceed the spirit of wonder and astonishment that permeated comic books, novels, and movies like The Day the Earth Stood Still, Flash Gordon, and Metropolis. "OK. This one is gonna be hard for me. I'm calling this my Blade Runner Memorial list, and I'm gonna include Alien as a horror film (maybe I should call this my Ridley Scott memorial list). In fact to keep this interesting I'm going to leave off all of the obvious picks 2001, Close Encounters, Star Wars etc. 1. Invasion Of The Body Snatchers (1956) - Truly scary even by today's standards. I never tire of this film. The 1978 version is actually quite good, but the original will always top my list. 2. Dark City (1998) - Dark, Smart, and unlike anything you have seen before, Dark City is hugely Inspired by but not a rip off of Metropolis. One of the best and most underrated films of the past ten years. 3.The Day The Earth Stood Still (1951) - Often imitated but never equaled. It still remains one of America's most powerful and important films. 4. Minority Report (2002) - An all to easily forgotten and overlooked film.
