"I took another little detour into the films (at least the three that I own) of Wes Anderson recently and, as always, they wound up being as funny and charming as I remember them.  From The Royal Tennenbaums to The Life Aquatic to The Darjeeling Limited, all of these movies from Anderson (as well as Rushmore, which I really need to just go buy) are primarily about absentee parental figures and how grown children, either by themselves or in a group, go about trying to surmount the problems that emotional or physical abandonment has left them with.  Tennenbaums is consistently my favorite of the batch, largely because the ensemble cast is just about perfect in all regards. Ben Stiller and Gwenyth Paltrow add some wonderful notes to Anderson regulars Luke and Owen Wilson and Bill Murray. And this might be my favorite Gene Hackman performance of all time because - and stay with me here - he plays Royal in the same way that Leslie Nielsen plays the doctor in Airplane!: Completely straigh ... "This week has been hectic and so I have only had time so far to enjoy two movies. No matter, the week is still young. Election (1999) is an old favourite. Alexander Payne is one of my favourite film makers and whilst he is still honing his craft here, I adore his screenplay's use of tone and narrative voice. For those who haven't seen it - Election is told through a number of different narrators, all of whom have views of the events that unfold throughout the course of the picture. Characters conflict one another's accounts and are unreliable, yet that is part of the joy and we always come to see through their self-deceptions. It is the story of a girl who is the class priss. Who clearly thinks that she is streets ahead of her classmates and wants all of the attention. She is misguided, believing that success will beget friendship. It is her smarmy attitude that causes the vividly negative reaction that her history teacher, Jim McAllister (Broderick) develops to her. He wants her t ... " [More]

"If there’s one thing I relate to on the big screen, it’s the depiction of fraternal relationships. I’m the middle of three brothers (excluding the half-brother I only knew as a toddler and the former stepbrother I only knew briefly as an adult), and at different points in my life I’ve either hated them or considered them my best friends. So, yeah, I can’t wait to see Step Brothers, starring Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly as new siblings who go from being enemies to BFFs when forced to live together. Choosing a handful of favorite movies about brotherhood is really tough. After all, tales of brothers go all the way back to almost the beginning, with the story of Cain and Abel. And a number of favorites can’t exactly be discussed, because the revelation of brothers, especially twin brothers, is often the surprise twist in films. So, before you start naming a thousand other films about brothers that I’ve forgotten (such as The Brothers McMullen and Legends of the Fall), keep in mind ... " [More]

"By now I suppose everyone has already figured out for themselves whether or not they like Wes Anderson's quirky disfunctional family comedies. If you don't like Anderson's films, The Darjeeling Limited probably won't convince you otherwise. If you are a fan of his previous work, you're in for a real treat, because The Darjeeling Limited is one of Anderson's best films. " [More]

"I'm sure this could be said of quite a few good film makers. But I really feel strongly that his films are an aquired taste. I really didn't care for Rushmore until the third time I watched it. The Royal Tenenbaums and Life Aquatic were both much better to me the second time around. Finally, with his latest, The Darjeering Limited, I loved it the first time around. I would have to say this is his best film to date. The colorful images, the camera movement and slow-mo scenes were stunning and the on-screen chemestry between the major players was a joy to watch. "There is a moment in "The Darjeeling Limited" in which Jack Whitman (the wonderfully sublime Jason Schwartzman) sticks his head out the window of a moving train. He sees the lovely Rita (Amara Karan) gazing back at him. It´s rare moment of male-female intimacy in a movie based on the relationship between three brothers. After being raised on years of "National Lampoons" and "Spaceballs" style comedy, anyone expecting one of them--or both--to be hit with a tree branch, camel head or other object. Obviously, it never happens, which is to the great advantage to the film. Director Wes Anderson (along with co-writers Schwartzman and Roman Coppola) makes sure the film never delves into the predictable, instead remaining on the side of honesty in a potentially ludicrous situation. Jack, Francis (Owen Wilson) and Peter (Arien Brody) are estranged brothers, all with their own issues. Francis feels the need to be a mother hen and reunited the trio to find their long-lost mother (Angeli ... " [More]

"This latest of Wes Anderson's films is, for me, right up there with The Royal Tenenbaums and Rushmore, which I love dearly. Quirky, offbeat, strangely simple (sometimes just strange), engaging, funny, sad. Excellent performances from the three brothers (Owen Wilson, Jason Schwartzman and Adrien Brody) taking this train trip in order to renew their bond after their father has died and their mother disappeared into a convent in Tibet. One of my very favorite moments has no dialog in it at all--it's just Adrien and Jason staring at Owen as he unwraps the bandages from his head and face. Their expressions are perfect and priceless. But throughout the film, more is often said with looks or gestures than through the understated dialog.Everything about it made me smile, from the large (characters and storyline) to the small: the odd yet well-chosen soundtrack; Anderson's use of color and slo-mo; careful overhead shots of (for instance) a tray's contents; subtle runni ... "I had nearly forgotten about The Onion Movie. The sketch-comedy-formatted film spin-off of the brilliant newspaper satire was made about four years ago and then was abandoned by original distributor Fox Searchlight. According to Wikipedia, it performed badly with test audiences, and when it was shelved and then dropped by the studio, the filmmakers — co-directors Tom Kuntz and Mike Maguire and screenwriter Robert Siegel (formerly editor of The Onion) — also walked away from the project. It spent the next few years involved in attempted rescue operations by New Regency and actor-writer Scott Aukerman (Run Ronnie Run!). Now, finally this trailer has shown up on the DVD of Fox Searchlight’s The Darjeeling Limited, implying that the studio will be dumping it to DVD sometime this year. As you can see, there was good reason for Fox to have initially distanced itself from the movie. I " [More]

"This was a good weekend for me in terms of movies...a few movies were ones that I've been trying to see for weeks but just haven't really gotten around to. However, one was a movie that I just happened to stumble on at my friends house. All of them were pretty good, and they are as follows: The Darjeeling Limited, Gone Baby Gone, Boogie Nights, and Paprika. As a huge Wes Anderson fan, I've been wanting to see The Darjeeling Limited since the day it got into theaters. However, I was a little bit disappointed with the film as a whole. It was obviously a Wes Anderson film, and he didn't really try anything new, and the actual narrative just wasn't nearly as compelling as any of his previous films. The performances are all great, and Adrien Brody adapts very well to Wes Anderson's childish, imaginary world. Because that's the way Anderson seems to view things...however, while this was absolutely perfect for all his other films, it would have been nice ... " [More]

"The Royal Tenenbaums and Life Aquatic rank very high amongst my favorite movies and so it was clear I had to see The Darjeeling Limited as well.I wasn't disappointed, Wes Anderson again manages to portray a dysfunctional family with a lot of congeniality and humor. Some of the best parts of the movie get along without words or action, just quiet scenes where one can observe the different characters and their reactions, proving again that images have the power to carry thousands of words. In my humble opinion this is one of the best movies of the year, and you shouldn't miss it!
