Animation veteran Faith Hubley worked solo for the first time since her husband's death in 1977 to oversee the feature-length cartoon The Cosmic Eye. The film concentrates on nothing less than the evolution of the earth, as seen through the eyes of three ultracool jazz musicians. Newly filmed material is blended with earlier Hubley projects to come up with an immensely satisfying unified whole. The animation is brilliantly complemented by the voicework (and musical contributions) of Dizzy Gillespie as the head musician, and by the soothing tones of Jean Stapleton as the humanized Earth. The film's overall message of peace, tolerance and conservation is never offered in the sledgehammer fashion of say, TV's Captain Planet. Completed in 1985, The Cosmic Eye was distributed on a limited basis the following year. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The Cosmic Eye is a most curious animated film, especially for those for whom "animated" means "Disney." Many will find it incomprehensible, while some others will find it simplistic, and from a narrative point of view, both are right. However, its episodic structure, which at times seems a bit random, is actually rather charming, and the lack of a strong story will not bother those who appreciate its message that people must learn to live and work together, both with themselves and with nature. However, even those who find Eye's screenplay lacking should appreciate the sheer visual beauty of the film. Utilizing animated techniques that Faith Hubley (and her late husband John) championed and/or pioneered throughout her illustrious career, Eye is a cornucopia of striking images. Much of the work is created in stylistic tributes to modern fine art masters such as Paul Klee, Marc Chagall, Wassily Kandinsky, and Pablo Picasso, and this makes for one of the most uniquely gorgeous cartoons ever created. With its stunning animation, The Cosmic Eye is a treat for all eyes, cosmic or otherwise, even if the aural portion will not please all ears. ~ Craig Butler, All Movie Guide
