The Blue Veil was the single most successful effort from the production team of Jerry Wald and Norman Krasna. Jane Wyman pulls out all the emotional stops as a young Frenchwoman named Louise, who, after losing her husband and child in WW I, devotes the rest of her life to selflessly caring for other people's children. In true "woman's story" fashion, Louise ages and ages beautifully, sacrificing all for the sake of others. On the brink of destitution, she is rescued by her former charges, all nicely grown up and boundlessly grateful. A remake of the French Le Voile Bleu, The Blue Veil was adapted for the American screen by radio's Norman Corwin. The sterling supporting cast includes Charles Laughton as a widowed manufacturer, Joan Blondell as a blowsy actress, Natalie Wood as Blondell's neglected daughter, and Richard Carlson, Audrey Totter, Agnes Moorehead and Don Taylor. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

lost interest.
The Blue Veil maybe an absolutely shameless tearjerker, but it's hard to keep from having those heartstrings tugged at the end -- even as one is groaning and saying, "Oh come on!" Veil is incredibly manipulative, but at least it's up front about it; it's a "woman's weepie" and proud of it. Anyone looking for truly insightful drama or for a screenplay that avoids the obvious emotion rather than embracing it wholeheartedly should definitely look elsewhere. And even devotees of this genre may find themselves occasionally blushing at the silly dialogue. Fortunately, most of that dialogue is delivered by Jane Wyman in what is arguably her finest performance. If the actress knows how mawkish much of the screenplay is, she never lets on, delivering a totally committed and electrifying performance. She's in full command here, dominating the film, yet skillfully finding nuances to flesh out her character and transforming her from a stereotype to a living, breathing person. There's a solid supporting cast, led by Joan Blondell and Charles Laughton, and they do very fine work, but it's Wyman's show all the way, and she makes the film well worth viewing. ~ Craig Butler, All Movie Guide
