He landed a regular role on the TV drama Boston Public, appeared on Broadway, and appeared in a movie called On Broadway. "This film is a feast to the senses, I swear it's that well crafted I could smell it. Although Pitt gives an adequate performance the real stars here are Roger Deakins (cinematography), Nick Cave & Warren Ellis (music), and Casey Affleck as the creepy and highly annoying coward that is Robert Ford. One of my faves of 2007. " [More]

"The title really says it all. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is too long to grab you, packed with ambiguity and judgements we are invited to question and clearly establishes that we will view Jesse James through the eyes and actions of ‘the Coward’. The story is one of hero worship turned sour. Robert Ford has grown up reading stories of the train robber Jesse James. Desperate to get close to him, he weasels his way into the small gang that James has formed to carry out one last job, then becomes disillusioned when James does not appear to value or respect him as much as he would like. Much of the film chronicles the slow evolution of this relationship between a lustful hero worship (with overtones of sexual desire on the part of Ford) to mistrust and paranoia. It frustrates that this portion of the movie passes so slowly. Good, multi-textured performances from Pitt and Affleck cannot save this portion of the film. I wanted more emotional c ... " [More]

"If there’s one thing I relate to on the big screen, it’s the depiction of fraternal relationships. I’m the middle of three brothers (excluding the half-brother I only knew as a toddler and the former stepbrother I only knew briefly as an adult), and at different points in my life I’ve either hated them or considered them my best friends. So, yeah, I can’t wait to see Step Brothers, starring Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly as new siblings who go from being enemies to BFFs when forced to live together. Choosing a handful of favorite movies about brotherhood is really tough. After all, tales of brothers go all the way back to almost the beginning, with the story of Cain and Abel. And a number of favorites can’t exactly be discussed, because the revelation of brothers, especially twin brothers, is often the surprise twist in films. So, before you start naming a thousand other films about brothers that I’ve forgotten (such as The Brothers McMullen and Legends of the Fall), keep in mind ... " [More]

"FORWARD: Once again, I am perusing deeper themes while looking at only a few movies. However, this review will probably not serve as a review per-say, where an amount of discussion is spent over the qualities of the movies. The movies cited are as examples to discuss deeper themes of character and qualities attributed to a movies plot. "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" is to be my chief example for this review, for the reason that after speaking with an individual who had seen some of this movie they had come to the conclusion that they did not like it based on the personification of the characters. In this movies case, the question can be honestly raised, whether or not that was the point. The facts of "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" are well researched, and it is therefore evident that what this film is laying down is an amount of truth that is not often seen in movies of its genre. Westerns in general are very character dri ... " [More]

"I hope it's not a spoiler to say that Ford does shoot James somewhere near the end of the movie. I thought it would never get to that point, though. The cinematography is very good. I enjoyed looking at many of the scenes. But the parts of the movie I liked best were the voice overs. And when you like the voice overs better than when the characters are characterizing and expositioning, there's a problem. I understand the movie was cut originally to four hours, and then it was trimmed down to the two and a half hours it was released in. I'd suggest cutting another hour out. The part of the movie after Ford shot James was the best, so I'd leave that as is. I'd figure so many feet per minute. Then I'd just take a scissor to the parts in front of the assassination until I'd cut an hour's worth of feet out. Snip here, snip there, then see what I'd left in. I'd be satisfied with whatever was left. I understand Casey Affleck got rave reviews for his complex portrayal of Bob Ford. I think ... " [More]

"It’s not always worthwhile to jump on rumors like this, but the idea that Brad Pitt could be cast as The Mighty Thor in Marvel’s upcoming movie adaptation (due June 4, 2010) is too good an idea to be left alone. The word comes from Latino Review that Marvel is simply tossing the actor’s name around, though apparently the role hasn’t even been suggested, let alone offered, to Pitt. Unfortunately, it’s hard to imagine that Pitt would be interested in playing a superhero. He’s still a big enough star and a talented enough actor that he might feel he’s above such a thing. However, if he wants to continue making great films like The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, which don’t make him much cash, he’s going to need some mainstream hits, and he could do much worse for a paycheck than wear a cape and helmet and fight evil as the Norse God of Thunder. So, I’ve come up with five reasons for Pitt to grab Thor’s hammer. Hopefully he’ll find the list convincin " [More]

"It's not often that you can give a positive review to a movie that put you to sleep, but that's the situation I find myself in with this picture. This movie is clearly too long, as I slept through about twenty minuets of it and missed no significant material, and too slow paced, as it's somber tone is at times somnambulant, but overall is an effective and ambitious movie. I must have entered and exited Dreamland at exactly the right time as I did not miss any important points in the story. The movie is about a man named Robert Ford (Casey Affleck) who may or not be a coward, who is obsessed with the legendary outlaw Jesse James (Brad Pitt). From the moment Robert is on the screen, we know the relationship- stalker/victim. Ford could be Mark Chapman and James could be John Lennon and the character relationship would have the same dynamic. At first James is vaguely flattered that he gets such attention, then annoyed, and finally, somewhat flattered and affectionate, albeit paran ... " [More]

"The 9th Annual Golden Trailer Awards were held in Los Angeles last night with what seems like a thousand winners announced in all sorts of categories representing movie marketing. There were awards for trailers, TV spots and posters divided up by genre (comedy, drama, horror, independent, etc.) and technical achievement (sound editing, motion graphics, etc.). While having too many categories can lead to questions of consistency — how does The Dark Knight beat out Iron Man for Best Action trailer but the latter film wins the Summer 2008 Blockbuster award? — it’s interesting to know which film’s ad employs the best music (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly) and which has the best voice-over (The Assassinatio " [More]
