Directed by Andrew Wagner.
Fact and fiction begin to blur in this comedy drama in which a filmmaker casts his parents, his siblings, and himself in a story loosely adapted from their own lives and personalities. Judy and Allen Wagner (played by Judy Wagner and Allen Wagner) are an elderly couple living in New York City who haven't seen their son, Andrew (Andrew Wagner), in some time. Deciding it's time they paid him a visit, Judy and Allen pack up their van and head out to Los Angeles, where Andrew is trying to make a name for himself as a director and screenwriter. Along the way, Judy and Allen decide to bring their daughters, Maggie (Maggie Wagner) and Emily (Emily Wagner), and the camera plays "fly on the wall" as Judy and Allen openly ponder the successes and failings of their children while they work on crossword puzzles, stop for meals, engage in small talk, and deal with the presence of fellow traveler Bumby (Judy Dixon). The first feature from Andrew Wagner, The Talent Given Us was awarded the Grand Jury Prize at the 2004 CineVegas Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

"I am Legend opens tonight, how does Will Smith surviving the apocalypse stack up in the small pantheon of post-apocalyptic movies? Where does the no budget, camp-fest Saucy Flyer UFO PI fit in? Also, interviewing filmmaker Andrew Wagner (The Talent Given Us) about how he makes films from one truth, “Life is hard.” Starting Out in the Evening is his new movie in theaters now. "My childhood pretty much took place in The Apostle. Junior High was eerily reminiscent of Welcome to the Dollhouse. My ideal image of High School is The Breakfast Club, but the reality was more like Elephant (before the killing starts). I think my college years were reminiscent of All the Real Girls. I know, none of those guys were in college but—when you consider how much time I spent with my girlfriend—neither was I. I'd say I currently feel most at home in a film I just saw, The Talent Given Us.But what I'd really like to be is a companion white-guy to Kevin Costner in Dances with Wolves. Not that I want to spend time with Costner, but I love how Kicking Bird describes his journey as "the path to be an authentic human." " [More]

"I'm halfway through this film right now and I love it. It's fantastic. Everyone should watch it. With family, if possible.Part of the amazement I'm experiencing with this flick is I'm watching a real family. Andrew Wagner shot this thing with his parents and two sisters and it's so genuine. I feel like I'm in a minivan with my parents and two sisters. But I'm liking it, so maybe it's more fiction than I thought.Anyway, see it. Currently, it's only available through Netlfix.
