"This is one of my favorite movies of all time, I wasn't expecting much out of Will Ferrell because I normally see his movies to see stupid comedies but he really did pull off the role of Harold well. The story was not only an original screenplay which you don't see much, but it was good. I love how everything and everyone was connected to each other and I actually felt for the characters for once. I'm not an emotional person either. Great dialogue, great acting, great cinematography. I loved the special effects from Harold's watch, they were simple but not the usual effects you see every day. Yeah. I definitely think people should watch it. " [More]

"This has not been a good week to be at New Line Cinema. After getting enslaved by the Time-Warner media monolith last week, the company could not even trumpet its swansong. “Semi-Pro,” the Will Ferrell sports comedy, was the last film to be released while still remaining a “free agent,” tanked at the box office, squeezing out $3 million less than “Meet the Spartans” just a few weeks ago.Let that sink in.Will Ferrell, who has a string of successes and is a worldwide box office “star,” made less in a comedy than a film that’s biggest asset was a Britney Spears clone shaving her head and breakdancing gladiators.Prognosticators are scratching their heads as to how this could happen, offering theories of a tired formula (Will Ferrell + a sport + wacky non-sequiturs = funny), an unstable movie-going weekend (though “Ghost Rider” did better in its second week last year at the same time and “Madea’s Family Reunion ... "First, I have a stunning announcement - I have finally caved to the man and joined Netflix! It's true! I figured what with all the time I spend at work and then at a theater (and that's a stage theater, mind you, not a cinema), I don't have time to go to the movies or even to make umpteen trips to a rental store. So, I decided I would try this handy little service, which is fine by me because I love when things just appear at my house, like DVD's I've purchased or Harry Potter books. Online is my way to be. I digress (again). The first movie in my queue was this little film, which came to me by way of several high recommendations from trusted sources. Plus, it stars my not-so-secret celebrity crush, Mr. Will Ferrell. Even when his movies are stupid and painful (Anchorman, anyone?), I still keep coming back for more because I find him so oddly appealing. And he is odd, so I can't explain this subtle attraction I have for him...anyways. Also, this mov ... " [More]

"Marc Forster is one of those directors that slips under the radar. I have now seen three films by him, but after seeing the director's credit for each, I thought "who's Marc Forster?"Marc Forster directed had previously directed Monster's Ball, which I liked but felt was a little overrated (some critics called it the best film of 2001), and the very moving Finding Neverland. Neverland was one of only two times I have ever seen someone cry in a movie theatre (the other was The Return of the King). It's odd that someone who has made such obviously compelling films has stayed mostly unkown to the cineaste community. Perhaps it is because his three most famous movies are so different, they hardly seem to be the work of the same man. Out of three, I would have to say that Stranger Than Fiction is probably the weakest. It is a comedy that is only moderatly funny, and falters when it tries to venture into Woody Allen-like philisophical territoy towards the end, mostly because its idea ... " [More]

"A brief, deliberately vague review of 'The Nines' I have always been interested in this philosophical concept, as well as Plato's 'Cave Parable, 'which has been worked into some of my most re-watched cinematic outings of the past few years (The Matrix, Fight Club, Old School -- OK, maybe not that last one).As a writer, I love the kind of Charlie Kauffman-lite vibe this film has going for it, much like 'Stranger Than Fiction,' but I think much more complex. Ryan Reynolds, who I know many are hot-and-cold over, really displays some heretofore untapped range in three separate roles. Hope Davis is always a welcome addition to any film, but --wow -- where did Melissa McCarthy come from? Have not seen a " [More]

"I hated this movie.I mean, the idea at the beginning sounds really good, new and interesting, with a man who think he's going crazy while there's a writer somewhere in the world who is actually writing about him and can change his life.I really liked this idea, and I thought it was going to be awesome, but......it was good for a funny movie, not for a "please-kill-me-now" drama. This movie has one of the saddest and most pathetic love stories I've ever seen, and I thought it was gruesome when the character played by Dustin Hoffman says: "You've gotta die 'cause the book is good".When I finally got out of the movie theatre I felt like it had been a really waste of time and money. "Another example of how a decent director can manage to get a good performance out of usually 'over the top' comedians by simply reigning them in. (Jack Black in Nacho Libre, Jim Carrey in Eternal Sunshine, Adam Sandler in Punch Drunk Love come to mind immediately). Not quite as good as most of the recent crop of esoteric independent films that have been crawling out of the woodwork in recent years (Being John Malkovich, Eternal Sunshine, I Heart Huckabees, etc etc) with oddball plotlines and a leap of faith and imagination by the audience required, - but overall, I think it works and is an enjoyable film on many levels. Maggie Gyllenhaal is appealing as the romantic lead, Emma Thompson and Dustin Hoffman give workable but unmemorable performances, and Will Ferrell does a fine job as the bland everyman lead - the one character which seemed totally unnecessary (except as someone for Emma Thompson to converse with) was Queen Latifah who seemed totally out of her element here. "I thought this was very compelling storytelling! I really appreciate the blurred reality between the narrative and the story. It allows the viewer so much more to consume than just being spoon fed a 3 act formula with some obligatory characters and arcs thrown in. And isn't that what makes cinema so appealing? It's relatable. When we can see a piece of ourselves in the story, it resonates and holds our attention. So the idea of the narrator, who typically is placed on a fairly equal plane as the viewer, is pulled into the story, it similarly blurs the reality for the viewer, forcing them to question their own degree of separation from "stories." Similar to the Truman Show, but with a more playful tone.AND they all played the chacaters so well! Very well acted! " [More]

"Because the trailers made it look like another dumb-humor Will Ferrell movie, I didn't really rush to see it. Only after a strong recommendation from a friend, did I actually take the time to check it out. I was surprised to find myself watching a really intelligent film. madelejm is right. The GUI is pretty sweet. I would even recommend checking the GUI bonus feature to learn more about it. I found it really interesting. " [More]

"The concept behind this flick is fun, but once things take a serious turn it was really the innovating visuals that kept me into this movie. I love the way they created their "GUI" to try to visualize his obsessive compulsive mind at work. Very neat visuals, interesting story. Dustin Hoffman really shines. People make a big deal about his roles in those Fockers movies, but I prefer this more understated humour. " [More]
