""Arachnids" and humans are at war, and "Johnny Rico" (Casper Vab Dein) has decided to join the military to fight the "bugs." Even though his parents, especially his father (Christopher Curry), object it and order him to go on vacation. He refuses, and joins the military. He joins his beautiful girlfriend (Denise Richards), in military training. However, after taking an exam, he is assigned to Mobile Infantry, while she is assigned to Flight School. He is also joined by his best friend (Neil Patrick Harris, and his female football team mate, "Dizzy" (Dina Meyers), who tries to make him forget "Carmen" (Richards). Now, after not being the best soldier-in-training and making a huge mistake resulting in the death of a fellow soldier, "Rico" decides to stick with the service as things begins to heat up in the war. This movie reminds me a little of the "RoboCop" films with the fiction television broadcasts and TV commercials in the start of the movie. It then goes to straight out action ... "

"Outrageous, entertaining, sexy. How does Paul Verhoeven get these performances? Particularly Dina Meyer as Dizzy who bought in 100%. Good for her. And what an arresting smile from Denise Richards. Anyway, I am impressed in a dumbed down sort of way - *** 1/2 / ***** Far, far, far superior to anything I have seen from the Dutchman, until?...... "

"Paul Verhoeven - 2006On the heels of Starship Troopers I ventured through this and it took me three nights to do so because of various distractions. My feelings are that this is certainly his premier film, his 6th feature after RoboCop (filmed in my home town of Dallas). It is interesting to see (and perhaps poll?) directors' finest efforts six to seven films in. Watch the "making of." Verhoeven has an irresistable love of the medium and the energy of a first time director. The female leads in the film are outstanding. Carice van Houten and Halina Reign brilliantly capture the desperate attempt to stay alive using sexuality and male manipulation. In this sense, Verhoeven gives Camille Paglia a run for her money and solidifies himself as a Dutch feminist. The production value of the second act is weak and is the only hint at the relatively small budget that Verhoeven had on the picture – it does play like a weak Sunday night television thriller. This stands among the best o ... "Every week or so you’ll hear about a video game being adapted for the big screen, especially with the gaming industry raking it in hand over fist these days. In the past year alone studios have touted the announcements of deals for game-based movies like World of Warcraft, Halo, and Metal Gear Solid. But what about the movies that already seem like video games? There are a fair share of flicks that feature everything from gimmicky camera styles to plotlines that seem like they were ripped right out of the latest console bestseller and plunked into multiplexes. Check out the list below and watch these video game movies that aren’t video game movies. 1. Elephant (2003): This Gus Van Sant film was inspired by the Columbine school shooters, who were in turn supposedly inspired by video games Doom and Wolfenstein 3D. The movie is made up of extremely long tracking shots, filmed just behind the character the story is currently following. By design, this makes the film look like a thirdp ... "

"Starship Troopers (1997, USA, Paul Verhoeven) **** Starship Troopers is the best movie David Cronenberg never made. It is an absolutely hilarious satire on militarist politics, the glorification of violence, and dumb high school and sci-fi movies. It's unfortunate that a lot of people (such our nations foremost critic) missed the point and considered it to be an example of the sci-fi crap it parodies. The movie is inspired by the novel by Robert Hienlien, which I have never read but many consider to be militaristic at best and fascist at worst. I say "inspired" because the movie takes Heinlien's "the military is always right" thesis and mocks it- Paul Verhoeven said the book was too depressing (for the wrong reasons) and too boring for him to finish. The plot- in the semi-distant future, humanity has united together under a new system of government: old-style democracy has failed, and the only people who can now vote is the military, which is very, very big and open to everyone, ma ... "The first time I saw this film, I KNEW it was from the director of RoboCop. I remember initially liking this film when I saw it in the theater, and I think it helps to watch it that way, as the action scenes are INTENSE. I like the underlying messages throughout the film and the blatant riff on Neo-Nazism and, ironically enough, the news media of "the future". I don't own it...but I suppose it's for lack of trying than anything else. Not a bad film...but possibly a little over-the-top for some. "
