"As I scramble to catch the last couple of films that will complete my Oscar Watch List, I am prematurely making my picks for the statuettes tomorrow night. I will save judgement on the Foreign Language and Documentary Short categories, neither of which I have had the opportunity to get into since I live in a town where you can see 4 screens of Rambo, but you're lucky to get to see an independent or foreign film only months after it comes out on DVD at the local film club. That being said, I have also not had the chance to see 3 of the Documentary Features, but am confident in my decision in that category nonetheless. Otherwise, by tomorrow night's Academy Awards ceremony I will have seen every single movie nominated in every other category. So, onto my picks: Screenplay, OriginalShould Win:

"Visually, there's no denying that the Wachowski's were on to something. The movie was a smorgasbord of colors. In fact, I think they might have even invented some new colors for it. But I've seen critics review this movie who figured out one reason it didn't do so well at the box office. The Wachowskis do experimental films on a big budget. They aren't going to make back the money that they spend on the film. I also don't know that people really gave it a chance. They automatically assumed since it was a live-action anime series it'd be bad. Heck, I thought so too. Especially as a Speed Racer fan. But really they pulled it off. It was rather true to the series. Cheesy? Yeah. But so was the original series. My biggest disappointment was the fact that they only wore the original costumes for a short period of time. And that they added the Mach 6. But I think the cast was fantastic, they all did a great job. Especially John Goodman as Pops Racer. He is Pops. And I loved the homages to ... "

"Andy Wachowski and Larry Wachowski did it again in this story about a young race car driver, who takes on the dangerous RACER X. Again, they have proven that they are masters of action and fast pacing. I really like this one. "

"It hasn’t been terribly uncommon since the late ’60s for musicians to get behind the camera, whether for a straight concert film, a tour documentary or some kind of silly narrative focused on themselves and their bands. Jerry Garcia co-directed The Grateful Dead, Frank Zappa co-directed 200 Motels, The Beatles collectively co-directed The Magical Mystery Tour and separately John, Paul and Ringo has each taken the helm on a film project, some more artsy (John and Yoko’s cinematic collaborations, like Up Your Legs Forever) or less self-focused (Ringo’s Marc Bolan doc, Born to Boogie) than others. Now it’s a little more common for musicians to become directors of fictional films that aren’t so reflexive. Many don’t even have anything to do with music at all. And many are so awful that it’s safe to say the filmmaker should stick to mus "

[What do you think?]
"Product placement in movies is now so overdone that we may not even notice it unless a particular film or TV show really hits us over the head with a blatant in-your-face product shot. Otherwise, seeing commercial goods everywhere merely seems like everyday life in capitalist America. Just look at any of the websites that tally up products spotlighted in mainstream movies and you’ll probably be surprised (though not shocked) at how many brands appear in each new release. Did you notice that Blades of Glory contains 38 separate products? Probably not. Many of those products couldn’t have gotten their money’s worth, because the movie doesn’t allow the audience to walk away recalling any one particular item. At a time when TV’s Top Chef and 30 Rock show us how lame blatantly whorish and ironic product placement can get, and while moviegoers are being subjected to more subliminal, suggestive and unintentional advertisements (Speed Racer, Wall-E and

"Speed Racer Have you ever sat down and watched a friend play a cool video game that they were really good at? And it looked so visually stunning that you thought you had to try it too. And then when you tried it you realized that you would need a lot of practice to be good enough to have anywhere near as much fun as your friend who had become so good at it. So it was actually more enjoyable for you to just sit back watch your talented friend play this stunning game instead of playing it yourself? That's what I thought Speed Racer was going to be like when I first saw the trailer. And that's pretty much what it ended up being. I had fun at this one because it was pretty much what I expected. Although I guess I didn't realize for some reason how explicitly geared towards kids it was. Or at least, it must have been marketed that way because every other group sitting with me in the movie theatre was parents with their kids. Maybe somehow my mind just couldn't put the phrases "W ... "In the long run, I'll have a lot to say about the use of computer graphics in cinema. But might as well start with this short chastisement I sent to the Filmspotting guys earlier in the year to express my horror at the critical reaction to this extremely well-conceived and well-crafted movie for kids of all ages. Only a tiny minority of reviewers correctly placed Speed Racer in its genre. Everybody knows a comic book movie when they see one now, but somehow the critical community can no longer recognize a cartoon! A few samples taken from Rotten Tomatoes

"When I first saw the trailer for Wanted, I figured it was just another Matrix ripoff. And I’m sure there are many other people who thought the same thing. Of course, some Matrix ripoffs aren’t bad — I absolutely love Kurt Wimmer’s Equilibrium, for example — but most are. Even worse, though, are the parodies of the Matrix’s “bullet time” sequences. Do we really need to see another movie character bend over backwards to avoid a bullet (or milk)? Or another movie character suspended in motion while the camera tracks around him or her? It’s no wonder that until yesterday, I had pretty much dismissed Wanted, because of that Matrix-like bullet time sequence in which Morgan Freeman shoots around a slab of meat to hit an unseen target. Yet as of yesterday, the movie’s

"It’s actually kind of funny that Speed Racer wound up being the in-flight movie on my return trip to Chicago from San Fransisco. It’s funny because at The Converation, one of the graphic artists who worked on the movie was on a panel and joked, after showing a clip, that the amount of people who had seen footage from the movie had just doubled. I did not think Speed Racer was as bad as some of the release reviews made it sound. In fact it’s quite enjoyable if you decide to go with the flow of the movie. I’m still no fan of Emil Hirsch (insufferable in Into the Wild) but he’s not bad here. And the rest of the cast performs admirably, especially John Goodman as Speed Racer’s mechanic father. It’s fast and light-weight, and the comments about the colors popping off the screen certainly hold true even on a tiny airplane seat-back screen. And I think the opinion that it was made for and perfectly acceptable for kids is more or less true. Sure there are some things that are going to have ... "
