One of the most popular independent comic books of its decade was transformed into this dark, bloody adventure intended to launch a profitable superhero franchise. Michael Jai White stars as Al Simmons, a corrupt assassin betrayed and murdered by his evil government supervisor, Jason Wynn (Martin Sheen). Sent to Hell, Simmons is offered a chance to return to the earthly plane if he will become a "Hellspawn" ("Spawn" for short), one of many super-powered creatures assigned to encourage living souls along the path to damnation. Simmons hastily agrees to this deal and becomes a twisted, scarred version of his former self, living in a dingy alleyway, with no hope of regaining his life, as several years have passed and his wife Wanda (Theresa Randle) has married his best friend, Terry Fitzgerald (D.B. Sweeney). Despite the best efforts of his mentor, a demonic clown (John Leguizamo), Spawn performs mostly heroic acts, though he is not above seeking revenge on Wynn. Despite the film's middling box office take, plans for a sequel were announced. The same summer that Spawn was released, the comic was also the basis of a well-received cable TV series. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

"This movie was so awesome back when it first came out, and I'll still play my Director's Cut version of it every once in a while because John Leguizamo was so cool as an ugly, little clown and I just love Spawn's cape. Yep, it's all about the cape. I actually tried watching that whole three part animated feature, but I only got half-way through the second one before giving up because I wasn't even sleepy, yet I was dozing. My husband fell asleep during the f " [More]

is neutral about it.
Many action movies resemble filmed comic books anyway, so it's nice to see one in which the cartoonish violence and silly characters are intentional. The audacious big-screen debut of flaky comic book artist Todd McFarlane's most popular creation is not for all audiences, however. Far from a corporate Batman clone, Spawn is daring, edgy, and wears its counterculture heart on its sleeve, making it a sure bet to enthrall some viewers and alienate others. With its horribly burnt, vengeful antihero (Michael Jai White); its perverse, villainous Clown (John Leguizamo, in a show-stealing turn); and its frequent trips down a fiery tunnel to the pits of Hell, it may appeal more to young horror fans than the traditionally mainstream superhero set. Hardcore fans of the comic book may quibble with some of the toned-down intensity, however, and will want to seek out the darker, more violent animated Spawn films which McFarlane made for HBO. ~ Robert Firsching, All Movie Guide
