"In addition to winning Best Picture (and seven other awards) at the Oscars last week, Slumdog Millionaire passed a major box office benchmark. It has now grossed more than $100 million in the U.S., which is pretty astonishing for a film with one-third of its dialogue in a foreign language. But is Slumdog’s popularity a one-shot in terms of its audience’s interest in India, or are moviegoers actually now more curious about the nation and its own films? "Two more days until we find out who wins this year’s Academy Awards! Okay, so the exclamation point is more than forced. It’s been quite awhile since we’ve had even an ounce of excitement about the Oscars. But we mustn’t let predictability get us down. Sure, even the still-uncertain races (Penn vs. Rourke; Winslet vs. Streep; Man on Wire vs. Trouble the Water) are anything but interesting, because the everyman of 2009 couldn’t care less about who gave the year’s better performance and would probably be fine shrugging his shoulders at the TV screen in the event of a tie (or, better yet, irresolution). However, there’s one thing people keep forgetting about the Academy: they’re full of surprises. "As I scramble to catch the last couple of films that will complete my Oscar Watch List, I am prematurely making my picks for the statuettes tomorrow night. I will save judgement on the Foreign Language and Documentary Short categories, neither of which I have had the opportunity to get into since I live in a town where you can see 4 screens of Rambo, but you're lucky to get to see an independent or foreign film only months after it comes out on DVD at the local film club. That being said, I have also not had the chance to see 3 of the Documentary Features, but am confident in my decision in that category nonetheless. Otherwise, by tomorrow night's Academy Awards ceremony I will have seen every single movie nominated in every other category.So, onto my picks: Screenplay, OriginalShould Win:

"Underworld: Rise of the Lycans is just very average. I've actually already forgotten most of it. The story was told in the first Underworld movie and so there are no real surprises. Michael Sheen ("Frost/Nixon") reprises his role as the werewolf Lucian and Bill Nighy ("Valkyrie") is back as head vamp, Viktor. The action is okay. The effects are okay. It's just all okay. Sadly, until just a few days ago, I had never seen Pretty in Pink. But I caught up with it and loved it. Written by John Hughes ("Just Visiting") it features many of his 80s teen trademarks: Molly Ringwald ("Not Another Teen Movie"), the clash between rich and poor, and lots of angst. John Cryer ("Two and Half Men") does an excellent lip sync. This movie really is awesome. From director Danny Boyle ("Sunshine"), Slumdog Millionaire tells the story of a poor boy from Mumbai who is accused of cheating on India's version of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire." "Slumdog Millionaire (2008) I am not a film critic. I have never written a movie review and frankly, I’m not sure that this even constitutes a movie review. But I need to tell you that none of the “real film critics” seem to understand what Slumdog Millionaire is all about. This is not a “rags to riches” story. This is not a movie about winning on the Indian version of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.” The game show is not the subject of the story – it just happens to be the medium in which the story is recorded. The same message could just as easily have been told by a campfire, or as a bedtime story or as parable for all ages…but then, of course, no one would be talking about it. "This really was an incredible film. It is rare that film can truly balance everything that you want in a movie; there seems always to be a short coming, but "Slumdog Millionaire" does not have one. The plot of "Slumdog Millionaire" is really very simple, at least at its most basic. It is that story, even when you have seen it again and again, that when it is done right, really makes you believe that there is hope in the world against all adversity. So this kid lives in the slums of India, and he has battled all manor of terrible events, just to get back to the true love of his life. "Atonement" tried this last year (well, not the slums of India part, but that does not really matter) and "Atonement" was awful. "Atonement" and "Slumdog Millionaire" have a lot in common besides their stories, even despite the face that one was excellent and the other was atrocious. They are both stunningly beautiful, have this age old plot, are Oscar nominees, and do not really make you laugh that muc ... "
