Like most prisons, the Luther Luckett Correction Complex in LaGrange, KY, strives to offer inmates a chance to better themselves and explore options to a life of crime, but something they feature that most prisons don't is a theater program. Each year, the inmates stage a play for the benefit of their fellow prisoners, and in 2004 they decided to tackle William Shakespeare's The Tempest; while an outside volunteer helped to direct the play, the bulk of the crew and the entire cast came from the prison population, and filmmakers Hank Rogerson and Jilann Spitzmiller documented the long gestation of this unusual production in Shakespeare Behind Bars. Along with offering a look at the rehearsals as the often-unlikely cast members learn to find themselves in their roles, the film includes interviews with many of the show's participants as they struggle to reconcile their pasts and search for personal meaning in their portrayals. Shakespeare Behind Bars premiered at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

"I first saw this great documentary at Waterfront Film Festival in Saugatuck Michigan in 2005. It was, I don't know how else to say it. A Great film. I for an hour and a half was not in an old boat barn but rather in a prison where inmates where being giving a chance to do something they maybe never had before and give them a almost another chance. Rogerson does a great job of introducing the different actors as the film goes. the most interesting thing to me is he all " [More]

"Gentles,Philomath Films award winning documentary Shakespeare Behind Bars was featured on National Public Radio's News & Notes with Ed Gordon program on Monday, August 21. The show featured inmate Hal Cobb (played Prospero in the Philomath Films documentary made about the SBB production of The Tempest) and me. Hal's participation on the show was a privilege granted by Tom Dailey, Warden of the Luther Luckett Correctional Complex, and approved by the Ke " [More]

"Shakespeare Behind Bars (dir. Hank Rogerson) cracks open the hardened shell of an audience and makes us look at the true human soul inside characters who are otherwise dismissible as "monsters." There is nobody I wouldn't recommend it to. So I have to limit the focus here to what was most important to me about the film and why I walked out knowing that my life is better for watching it. Curt Tofteland has been volunteering on a weekly basis with prisoners in Kentucky for ten " [More]

"I watched this today (the same day of its release) and must say I enjoyed it very much. (I had heard a similar story quite some time ago on This American Life, titiled Act V, and it has since become my favorite episode.) This film explored many similar ideas of redemption and forgiveness. It really put a human face on prison inmates. I also enjoyed the fly on the wall style, where the director didn't try to set up context, or go into the prison system and statistics. He just showed the audi " [More]
