"Owing in large part to tomes of modern serial-killer lore as The Silence of the Lambs and Se7en, Antibodies attempts to weave a twisted epilogue to such tales of woe in a visually alluring, yet bemusedly hackneyed way. Featuring a murderer with a stare that will produce nightmares in the most thick-skinned of horror fanatics, the film follows the events after his capture and the mysterious circumstances around a police inquiry into one of his victims. A slew of plot twists keep the dramatic tension palpable without flirting too much with the unbearably implausible - all leading to a barrage of revelations that will keep you guessing till the closing credits. mercurialmercurial Anamorph - Review

"Uncannily similar to David Fincher's Se7en, Anamorph follows two detectives trying to piece together a string of elaborate murders that resemble the work of a supposedly dead serial killer from the past. Still traumatized by the events from the madman's first series of murders, Stan (Willem Dafoe) must piece together the puzzle before more innocent people die. Not the most original storyline, yet the use of anamorphosis as the killer's method of staging his murdered victims is rather captivating in that "wow-that-is-totally-f***ed-up -yet-kinda-cool" way. Unfortunately suffers from too many pointless flashbacks, unresolved character arcs and a general malaise from most of the characters that spreads to the viewer. " [More]

"Dark, grainy and depressing, this movie took me by surprise when I saw it. The "goth" movement was in full swing (indeed, Nine Inch Nails' "Closer" remix is heard over the opening credits) and Brad Pitt still had to prove his mettle. At this point, he was still a pretty boy, but his role in "12 Monkeys" a few months later (and the reverberations of "Kalifornia") started to change my mind. Kevin Spacey, who I'd recently seen in The Ref and Swimming With Sharks, was eerily perfect as John Doe - he totally held my attention the few minutes he was on-screen. And this was my first time seeing Morgan Freeman's "elder stateman" role that he would come to perfect over the years. I'd seen Alien 3, so I kind of knew what to expect visually from the director, but this film went way beyond all expectation. Definitely one to watch, but be prepared for a rain cloud to hover over your head for the rest of the day. " [More]

"I had an epiphany tonight while watching a movie. The mark of a truly great film is that it get the viewer invested in it and motivates them. Examples of this are Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. After watching this you can’t help but want to be a better American. It makes you believe in something. When the theme of the film is dark like Se7en, the connection you make with Brad Pitts character at the films climax can not be understated. You have to put yourself in his shoes, and it forces you to ask yourself questions you normally wouldn’t. A few other examples are: the gut wrenching feeling you get every time Bogey watches the plane take off in Casablanca (the definition of bittersweet), white knuckling the arm chair when the bolder almost flattens Indy.[More]

"I told them. I told them both."We have three free rentals from Blockbuster, " I said. "Yes, it's Tuesday, and that means new releases. But," I concluded, "you do [i]not[/i] want me to get Epic Movie."But I was outnumbered two to one. Overruled. I should have said something. I should have just not wasted a perfectly good free rental. But alas, I care too much about my wife and my brother. So I rented Epic Movie. The "unrated" DVD (more on this subject to come later today) had a 93-minute running time, some six minutes longer than the theatrical release. I hoped it was funny. If not, it was only an hour and a half - a pretty short movie considering some of the epics I've seen. And that was just the first thing wrong with the movie. If you're going to make a spoof (and this one is a spoof, not an homage) about epic movies, you should probably try and mimic the epic movies you're making fun of. The Lord of the Rings trilogy ran about ten hours, and that' ... " [More]

"Rated a 5/10 gore-wise, this slick thriller qualifies on all levels as a finely orchestrated work, a well-spun web of intricate characters and horrifying situations, down to a killer ending. ;) " [More]
