"Serenity was in my red envelope this week after a series of events led me to the film. When it was released, I had been intrigued by it purely because of its status as a science fiction film, and most of the people that I know who saw it generally had favorable things to say about it. What I didn't realize until later was that Serenity was the spinoff or continuation film of the series Firefly, which aired on and was quickly cancelled by Fox in 2002. I remember actually trying to watch Firefly when it originally aired, at least for a couple of episodes. I didn't get it then. I was not, at that time, a viewer of Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Angel and did not really give too much thought about Joss Whedon. I didn't understand why Firefly was a western or what its wacky if clever and slightly campy sense of humor was all about. I quickly got bored and stopped watching it. I was never initially a fan of Buffy or Angel either, even though friends of mine absolutely obsessed over th ... "

"The Western Top 10 is the toughest for me. As some of you may know, while I'm hardly Richard Slotkin or Jane Tompkins, I write, teach, and think about this genre on a regular basis, and, as a result, my views are not only fairly strong, but well-informed. And, where certain well regarded classics are concerned, they are also iconoclastic. This is probably nowhere more obvious than with The Searchers (1956), the film that tops the AFI list. This film does not resonate with me on any level. I have never found the ending credible. John Wayne does not portray Ethan Edwards with any of the complexity needed for his embrace of Debbie (Natalie Wood) to ring true after his 118 (or so) minutes of hard, racist ranting about Native Americans and his intent to kill her. I also find the photography and production design to be garish without purpose, and for all of its superficial sophistication about Native peoples, the talk of ritual, the use of indigenous language, it only serves to perpetuat ... "If you were a fan of Firefly, you knows exactly what I am talking about. Firefly was an orginal creation by Josh Wheaton. For some reason the powers that be (FOX) decided that it wasnt a good enough television series that they canceled way before it had a real chance to florish. Little did they know that an underground movement would push back and have a huge cult following. So large in fact that they decided to come out with the movie Serenity. Serenity was a huge hit not only among the loyal brown coats, but also for those who never had actually watched the series or let alone knew that it existed. What was so great about the movie was you didnt have to be a fan of Firefly to enjoy Serenity. It was a movie within its own self. The plot was good as well as the acting and the special effects. Everything tied up neatly and centered around the explaination of what River Tam really knew about the Alliance. But how it effected all of them.Without giving anything away, you must either r ... "

"when the show (firefly) came out, it was the best show on tv. when it went off the air, it could be argued that it was one of the best tv shows ever, if not the best (it certainly trumped buffy) the movie was not as succesful, but it certainly is worty of some merit. the acting is perfect, the storyline was good (even if it pissed some fans off) and the special effects were wonderful. the camera work also stayed true to the show with a few good zooms and focus blurs. the soundtrack was good, but sometimes i wish they used the show's composer. me and a few freinds argue about this movie all the time, so it's about time for me to get hate mail. i liked this movie more than lord of the rings in every way. "What can I say, having loved the Firefly series for its wit and on-screen chemistry of the cast (okay the story lines were pretty good too) I knew I'd either LOVE Serenity or hate it.... (but only in an "it didn't transfer to the big screen well" kind of way... ) Well I loved it, the whole thing transferred beautifully to the big screen, the action was "action packed" and the funnies were just as funny even though the whole thing takes on a slightly darker tone than the Firefly series itself. I laughed, I twisted in my seat to dodge laser, erm no EMP beams and I cried quite a bit too! Sorry but the film is tinged with a little sadness.Summer Glau excelled her self with the fight scene, which I believe she did most of if not all herself? Don't quote me on that! Most of the old plot holes from the series are all tied up neatly with a pink ribbon, which is a shame, as theres now no reason for a sequel! Only a few questions where left unanswered in my eyes, like who we ... "

"I used to think Joss Whedon was a genius. No, start over. Joss Whedon is a genius, but he’s going through an interesting stage of re-development. I was one of those people who might have seen ‘Buffy:the Movie‘ (1992) on it’s initial release and greeted the series with an attitude of ‘meh’, only to see it grow into the trenchant occasion of ‘The Body‘ during its 5th Season, before the show became bored with itself. I also watched ‘Angel’ grow from its dodgy 1st Season to the kick-ass triumph of its early cancellation by the WB network. While both of those shows were interesting and ‘important’ in that parenthetical way that takes old ideas and recasts them in surprising new ways, the thing that REALLY sold me on Whedon was his ‘Alien: Resurrection‘ script. Though many people hated — hated - ‘Alien:Resurrection&rsqu o; (1997), I thought that it was the best installment of the franchise ... "

"Ever heard of a little show called Firefly? It ran for less than a season on fox, generated great reviews, but very few viewers. If you have never seen an episode of firefly, go out right now and buy the DVDs. This is a refreshingly simple, hilarious, and action-packed show. This movie is even better. It picks up where the show left off and stitches together the action, space opera, comedy, zombie horror, and western genres together. This may sound like a horrible Frankenstein of a movie, but it ends up being one of the best sci-fi films in recent memory. Joss Whedon makes his feature debut as director, showing that he is more than competent at stitching together fast paced scenes into a cohesive narrative. Like Arrested Development, Firefly had a cast that I paid attention to after their respectful shows were canceled. All of the actors in this movie are brilliant, especially Nathan Fillion, whose Captain Malcom Reynolds is a funnier version of Han Solo. The other great ... "
