"The shortlist has been announced for the 2009 Cinema Eye Honors. The list includes a number of titles that many felt were unjustifiably snubbed from the Oscars shortlist, some based on qualification quibbles, including Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired, My Winnipeg, The Order of Myths, Stranded: I’ve Come From A Plane That Crashed Into The Mountain, and Waltz With Bashir. Omitted: Dear Zachary, a number of Oscar shortlisted titles including I.O.U.S.A., and each of the top five highest grossing non-fiction films of 2008, including Religulous. I’ve pasted the full shortlist after the jump with links back to previous coverage of the films on SpoutBlog. Though I haven’t personally seen all of these, between everyone on the Spout team we’ve previously covered all but two.

"Talk about movies making a difference. MIchael Cieply reports that attorneys for filmmaker Roman Polanski, who has long lived in European exile rather than face prison time for ancient charges stemming from an incident involving a teenager, quaaludes and Jack Nicholson’s hot tub, have filed motions to have the case dismissed due to new evidence contained within Marina Zenovich’s documentary Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired. The film, which I reviewed at Sundance, strenuously argues that Polanski was the victim of a corrupt justice system and an egomaniacal judge, and thus the director had no choice but to flee from an unjustly excessive sentence. I took issue with the film’s sub-theme that only silly, repressed Americans would so strictly punish Polanski for the collateral damage inflicted by his tortured genius, but the evidence presented regarding the capricious flaunting of procedure by the Los Angeles court system is convincing. "When the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announces a shortlist for one of its Oscar categories, many critics immediately focus on what titles are missing. Religulous was snubbed! Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired was punished for having a “secret” qualifying run! The Academy’s rules for eligibility must be amended! Such reactions were seen all over the web last week as awards season pundits looked at the narrowed-down list of 15 Feature Documentary hopefuls and criticized the Academy for its omissions. But the better response (which is the one SpoutBlog had) is to primarily address and celebrate the included films, not just for being contenders for the Feature Documentary Oscar but also for being showcased in general. "I didn't know much about Roman Polanski before watching this film and it certainly left me with mixed emotions. I was torn between feeling sympathy for the victim as well as feeling poorly for how Roman was treated. I was left thinking that justice wasn't served on either end. This film highlights the theatrics of the judicial system for the sake of pleasing the media. What also struck me that since this film was how it made me think of today's big cases and how courts might be influenced by the press, more worried about the story and the presentation, than the situations of the victims or the defendants. Overall, it’s a good watch and it’ll certainly make you think. "

"I think it is hard to go back and look at the events around the Polanski rape case objectively, obviously that didn't happen during the trial nor since then.I have to say that I didn't know much about Polanski besides watching a few of his films. I didn't know anything about his past, nothing about his childhood during WWII, the death of his wife, the sexual fiasco he had with a 13 year old, nor the subsequent sham of the trial he had to go through. With that said I think the guy is a fantastic director and has a tremendous ability to tell stories. However, this film set out to explain what happened during the trial of Polanski for "sex with a minor"... and succeeded to tell one of the most manipulative stories I have ever heard/seen. Let me explain:Before the film really gets into the trial the moviemaker of this documentary decides to show the audience Polanski's background--the most unfortunate parts of it. We learn that Roman survives the holocaust however his parents do not, w ... "
