"Remember how amazing Carrie Fisher looked in that metal bikini when she was chained to Jabba the Hutt in Return of the Jedi? Have you ever thought about the how she looks extra good because her body is in every conceivable way the total opposite of Jabba the Hutt’s body? That’s all I have to say about this photo. "The Science Fiction Top 10 is notable for having what is arguably the least disputable number one on all of these lists in 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). Even after two decades, the film remains gorgeous and convincing-looking, and still capable of provoking debate about technology, the nature of intelligence, and humanity's identity and place in the universe. It has left an indelible mark on how the future, and how space and space travel, is visualized and imagined, especially, but not exclusively, on film. It's a masterful work, and it's difficult for me to think of a more deserving selection for the top of this list. At the same time, this Top 10 has its share of both puzzling selections and curious absences.E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982) at number three leaves much to be desired. Not only does the movie not hold up to repeated viewing, but it also barely qualifies as science fiction. True, the AFI's definition of this genre calls for “imaginative speculation”, but it also sta ... " [More]

"believe that this is the first movie review I have posted where I have nothing major to say about the flaws in a movie. The only thing wrong in this movie is that some of the alien dialog is not subtitled, but I believe that was intentional. The entire cast is fantastic and are very believable in their roles. None of the cast, including the minor cast members, feel uncomfortable with their dialog. The visual special effects is fantastic. After 20 years, the visual effects are still incredible and believable. They are still some of the best in motion picture history. The make-up is incredible. There are rarely any aliens that look like people in costumes. Those that don't work well are noticeable, but they are mainly in the background and you won't notice them if you are not looking at them. Overall, this is one of the best science fiction movies of all time. It is a "must have" for any sci-fi fan's video/DVD collection and a "must see" for any one who loves a fantastic adventure mo ... "1982 may have been the greatest year ever. At least for a 9 year old movie geek it was. Sure, '81 brought us the births of Indiana Jones and Snake Pliskin and '83 would wrap up the Star Wars trilogy and introduce us to the glaive and Tom Cruise, but '82 gave us E.T., Fast Times, Rocky III, Conan, The Thing, First Blood, Tron, Wrath of Kahn and Blade Runner . To close out the year was a little movie called the Dark Crystal. I saw a few of these in the theatre, but as I was only 9 (and funds were slim), most would have to wait for VHS. I did get to see The Dark Crystal in the theatre however, most likely because it was from mother approved Jim Henson and company. And really, that's all I needed to know. It was by the father of the Muppets and the voice of Yoda. Does a kid need to know any more than that? For the uninitiated the Dark Crystal follows " [More]

"When I was watching the Prequel Trilogy I noted the film-to-film decline of wasted space in the movies, with Revenge of the Sith being pretty tight compared to all the unnecessary moments and camera shots in The Phantom Menace.  Watching the Original Trilogy you’ll see an almost complete lack of those sorts of gratuitous moments. There’s little to no fat on these movies (a little in Return of the Jedi, but A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back are as lean as they come) and they move along at an incredibly brisk pace. They very much show Lucas’ edict of “faster and more intense” whereas the Menace is full of bloat and laziness. I hadn’t watched these three in quite a while and so they wound up seeming pretty fresh to me, which is nice to have happen with movies that I’ve seen regularly in theaters, on VHS and then DVD over the last 30 years. I felt excited as the space battles progressed and was caught up in the adventure, just like I should have been.  [More]

"After Star Wars: A New Hope and Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, it was clear that George Lucas had something hot in his hands. At this point, Lucas was under some pressure, and it would've been easy to produce a followup that was a disaster and let everyone down. Star Wars: Return of the Jedi shows Lucas' ingenuity: he combines the best elements of the previous two episodes and produces a movie that is not only technologically advanced, in terms of special effects, but ties the loose ends together in a consistent whole. The plot is similar to Star Wars: A New Hope. The Evil Empire has built a new killing machine, much more powerful than the Death Star (even though it has the same weak points as far as blowing it up is concerned). The Rebel Alliance must destroy it before it destroys them. Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), along with Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher), Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew), Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams), C3PO (Anthony Daniels), and R2D2 (Kenny Baker) tie up t ... "If you’ve been watching the cable channel Spike lately, you’ve been sufficiently reminded of what a disappointment the Star Wars franchise has become. But if you haven’t caught the station’s heavily advertised run of all six movies, you may not want to watch this leaked trailer for the CGI-animated The Clone Wars, at least if you’re attempting to go on convincing yourself that Star Wars is still cool. Actually, if you’re still a big Star Wars fan, you’ll probably love this trailer (which may still be on Gizmodo after YouTube takes it down). It features a number of your favorite characters and it may get you excited for the theatrical release of the film, which is s " [More]

"Some don't like what was done with this film, but in the context of all six installments I think it was a decent conclusion. I also want to highlight this episode has one of the greatest cinematographic moments in the six installments, when Darth Vader decides to test Luke Skywalker's faith and use of the Force, to lure him to the dark side. "Generally considered by most to be inferior to the first two films in the trilogy. Not surprising, as that’s what happens with most movie franchises. However, since it is part of the whole, it cannot be left off the list entirely. Plus it’s a fun movie with a happy ending. " [More]
