"Discussion of this summer’s heroine lack is in full throttle. Last friday, New York’s Vulture blog asked, “Where are the Roles for Superwomen?; Stu at Defamer jumped off from there, ultimately suggesting an X-Men spin-off for Ellen Page; John at The Movie Blog listed reasons “Why Most Female Lead Action Films Don’t Succeed” (shocker: men can’t identify with or believe in strong — and strong — female characters). Now, adding to the conversation in the least noble way possible, USA Weekend presents the appropriately titled “Girls Want to Have Fun, Too”, a cover story (with the least flattering photos I’ve ever seen) from its summer movie preview th " [More]

"Ever since 2002 when it first came out, I had no intention of watching Resident Evil. I'm not a gamer, it nothing about the trailer appealed to me. Then recently I saw a teaser for RE: Apocolypse and the eeriness intrigued me. So up it shot in my Blockbuster queue. For my fellow zombie fans out there, this is in a Romero-ish mold -- if you get scratched, bitten, or even partially eaten by zombies, then you will share their fate. And like Day of the Dead - who knows, maybe there's a cure. For some mysterious (and obviously sinister) reason, a group of people are exposed to a virus and communication is lost. Enter elite soldier squad and our heroine, Milla Jovovich, to neutralize any baddies and rescue any hostages. For the first few minutes, Milla is actually playing the role of Leeloo from Fifth Element. I'm not complaining, just sharing the facts. I enjoyed it. I guess I had semi-low expectations considering its videogame roots, but it was a decent action flick. ... " [More]

Their similarities beg a double feature: each of these fine ladies are the only one capable in their respective flick of stopping evil corporations from procuring or manufacturing weapons destined to wipe out the human race in the name of “security” despite their heavily armed marine type escorts, each has an equally bad ass Hispanic Lady side-kick of sorts who bites it in a rough-ass way near the end, and they both also have some pretty sweet weaponry and skills at disposal. "When I watch a zombie movie i'm inevitably moved to compare it to the first zombie movie I ever watched which was (as it was for so many of us) Romero’s “Night Of The Living Dead”. When I do make the comparison I look for two points. First, does the movie have the gross out factor that I experienced when Tom and Judy became zombie barbeque and second, am I as surprised at the end as I was when Ben receives a shot in the head from a zombie hunter. On both of these levels “Resident Evil” is only mildly successful. I Like laser security system effect. Getting cross cut into a million pieces is gross on so many different levels, but having seen quite a few slice and dice movies it’s not as effective as it might be. Surprise endings aren’t a major point for this movie however. I found little wonder in Milla ending up strapped to a gurney in a hospital and all of Raccoon City fallen to the Zombie Virus. All and All I would have to rate ... " [More]

"i think this movie is very good,it has a good background story, making the difrence betwen rezident evil and other zombie horror films, where zombies, just apear from....nothing....void...they just apear there....while in rwzident evil there is a spicy story: The Umbrella corporation is so full of mister.Nine of ten houses use its products. And even unknown to they own employers the umbrela corporation's high income comes from selling bioweapons tehnology, but someone is trying to put sticks in the umbrela's wheels, starting a whole disaster, and it's all the Red Queen's fault..... And that's not all,i would say that Resident Evil is a "MUST WATCH" movie, " [More]

"Finally, a supercomputer that HAL can drool over: The poshly accented Red Queen is a see-all AI villain, and she can easily outwit and outlast any fools (read: bad actors) who attempt to infiltrate the Hive, an underground research facility dedicated to the development of a deadly virus. Beyond that, the who, what, and why of Resident Evil, the latest video game to make it to the big screen courtesy of Mortal Kombat director Paul W.S. Anderson, are unimportant. Things begin promisingly, with a frantic action sequence intercutting Hive employees trapped underground when the protective computer shuts the place down after a lab accident and, on the other side of town, Milla Jovovich lying surely dead on the floor of her shower. Then, all of the workers finally die, Alice (Jovovich) gets up, and the blah-blah exposition begins for those not familiar with the titular shoot-'em-up. But just when the movie starts to feel like a science lecture too infrequently interrupted by one wicke ... " [More]
