Afghani documentarian Wazhmah Osman fled her native country in 1979, with the nation buckling beneath the weight of the ongoing Soviet invasion. In the process, the filmmaker left behind her father, and took to America only a scant few still photographs as lingering reminders of her homeland - many of which were promptly stolen during the migration. The nonfiction, Farsi-language film Postcards from Tora Bora (its title referencing a geographic area in the White Mountains of eastern Afghanistan, southeast of Kabul) documents Osman's return to Afghani soil, where she hopes to locate her paterfamilias and long-buried reminders of a culture that she abandoned over 25 years prior. The film witnesses Osman struggling valiantly to regain and strengthen memories that are rapidly fading from her mind, with the help of several guides who bring the past flooding back to her. During her journey, Osman both works to locate tangible evidence of her former life, and creates a lingering portrait of Afghanistan's tumultuous sociopolitical history. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide
