A touching, visual portrait on the life of Georgian artist Niko Pirosmanichvili, with Avtandil Varazi in the title role. A lonely artist, going from town to town, paints rather charming works, but has a difficult time getting them displayed. He is, however determined to get recognition. The film is structured as a series of impressionistic episodes from the artist's life, leading up to his tragic demise from alcoholism and starvation in 1919. A sad commentary on the fate of many talented artists. Winner of the Sutherland Trophy at the 1973 British Film Institute Awards. Plain cover sleeve. Russian with English subtitles.
