Directed by Don Chaffey
Based on a story by Hollywood old-timers Seton I. Miller and S. S. Field, Pete's Dragon divides its time between its flesh-and-blood characters and an animated blue dragon. Pete (Sean Marshall), a lonely orphan boy in turn-of-the-century Maine, runs away from his abusive foster family. He stumbles upon a lovable dragon named Elliot, and the two become inseparable companions. Elliot is visible only to Pete, leading the townsfolk to assume that the boy is a trifle tetched. Pete finally finds happiness with his "new" family, lighthouse-keeper Lampie (Mickey Rooney) and his daughter Nora (Helen Reddy, who sings and sings). British comic actor Jim Dale co-stars as the wacky dentist Dr. Terminus. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

"[quote user="Risselada"] I had to check your list to see how broadly you classified a movie as being fantasy. I see you put Groundhog Day on there which really doesn't have a lot of fantastical elements other than one basic anomaly that causes him to keep reliving the same day over and over. Other than that, each day is actually pretty normal without any magic or strange crea " [More]

"[quote user="pippin06"] Hi fantasy lovers! You may have noticed if you joined the group that there is a list, currently locked, called "The Best Fantasy." I created that list when I created the group, mostly because it was an excuse for a list I could create, but most of the entries are what I think are the best. I locked it because I realized - I think we need a compiled list from the membership. Something a la some of these other groups I " [More]

is neutral about it.
Following in the tradition of hybrid classics like Mary Poppins and Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Pete's Dragon is a live-action musical adventure where real people interact with Disney-style animated characters. Namely, a cartoon giant dragon named Elliot that is occasionally invisible. It was a big hit at the box office at the time of release, and even was nominated for two Academy Awards, for the musical score and the song "Candle on the Water." Made during a bit of a rocky time for Disney, this is still just a mediocre effort and mostly just good for nostalgia value. The hammy overacting is almost unbearable, particularly an over-the-top Mickey Rooney as lighthouse keeper Lampie and shrill Helen Reddy as his daughter, Nora. Acting veterans Shelley Winters and Red Buttons also make exaggerated appearances. The animation is subpar, but it marks one of the last projects by Don Bluth and Gary Goldman before they left Disney and went to make classics like An American Tail. This movie is no classic by critical standards, but it has enjoyed a long life on home video with younger viewers. For its 1984 re-release, Pete's Dragon was cut down to 104 minutes, but was restored to its original length for the 2001 DVD release. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, All Movie Guide
