"During these screwy mid-season television reruns and during my last free week before technical rehearsals for The Producers at the Grand Rapids Civic Theater fire up, I trolled my Netflix queue for something light and frothy and simple again and happened upon Penelope, newly available instantly. I was interested in this film because it's a fantasy, a modern fairy tale of sorts, and because it boasted an appealing ensemble cast, including Christina Ricci, James McAvoy (hello Mr. Tumnus), Catherine O'Hara, Peter Dinklage, and Reese Witherspoon. I don't think the film received much press or garnered huge box office receipts, so I watched the film with more curiosity and fewer expectations. I hoped for a good yarn, which I think I saw...for the most part. Of course, I'd seen it, or a version of it, before. Penelope (Ricci) was born under a witch's curse. Her father's family ancestors were cruel to the witch, so she cursed the first daughter born in the lineage with an unsightly bi ... " [More]

"Director Mark Palansky obviously would cite Tim Burton as an influence, and that's not a bad thing. I'd rate this film as "if you loved Big Fish, you'll probably love this film, too". The script is severely underdeveloped, and the film would probably be subpar were it not for the FANTASTIC performances by all the actors involved. Catherine O'Hara (Beetlejuice?), Richard E. Grant, Peter Dinklage and James McAvoy pull in some amazing performances (considering what they had to work with), but it's Christina Ricci who truly shines. Even with the badly applied prosthetic nose, she charms with such a natural beauty that it's hard to believe all of the blue blood suiters who run away screaming couldn't JUST see underneath that nose to the wonderful person she is. Ricci's acting has definitely improved over the years, and she needs to sink her teeth into something worthy of her talent and beauty. A cute movie for the whole family...and Ricci and Mc ... "i felt bad for disliking this movie (and didn't have the guts to say so) because i went with a group who happened to really like it. it's one of those flicks that from the very beginning, you have to consciously force yourself to buy into the lame plot and character arcs. none of the characters, the premise, nor the unfolding events invited me in. for the sake of my own well-being, i played the part of an amused movie-goer, but not too far deep inside, i was tired of the trite dialogue, lame humor and unfortunately subpar acting that was all evident within the first ten minutes. the whole ugly duckling theme wasn't ever treated with the depth and sincerity it could possibly have been aiming for. characters' revelations were weak, shallow and poorly revealed. it was a disappointment, but then again, i wasn't expecting much. i just went to go spend some time with a friend. James McAvoy was this movie's only redemption, probably just for his supreme cute ... " [More]

"I thought Penelope was a cute movie. I appreciated that it was rated PG, but that it was still an adult movie - it was refreshing. It isn't in my top ten, but it proved itself to be uniquely entertaining. " [More]
