"Publisher Quirk Books and author Seth Grahame-Smith have come up with the best way to make a literary work more accessible since the creation of Classics Illustrated comic books: they’ve added “all-new scenes of bone crunching zombie action” to Jane Austen’s 19th century novel Pride and Prejudice. This new version, out in stores this May, is titled Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: The Classic Regency Romance – Now With Ultraviolent Mayhem! And if you didn’t think it was a masterpiece before, chances are you will now. Could we do the same thing to classic films? Well, the technology to add extraneous enhancements to movies exists. Just check out The Curious Case of Benjamin Button for proof. But like Pride and Prejudice, we’d need to “enhance” films in the public domain if we wanted to get away with it. Fortunately, there are hundreds of such titles (

"When you gather with your loved ones this week, be sure to give extra thanks for that turkey or soy-based equivalent on which you’re about to dine. Times are hard, but for most of us, we’re still able to eat. Nevertheless, we need to prepare for the even tougher times that inevitably lay ahead. As countless movies attest, desperate times call for desperate measures at the dinner table. Like cannibalism. The circumstances under which “eat or be eaten” becomes the rule vary widely. Plenty of films have taken on this ancient taboo; in fact, a search for the tag “cannibal” on Spout.com yields eleven pages of results. For your holiday viewing pleasure, I’ve narrowed the list down to ten. Alive

"Two weeks ago I wrote a list of five doomsday films ranked by plausibility. The response to this piece made me realize that I overlooked the most pressing apocalyptic threat of all: zombies. The onslaught of the living dead has been a mainstay of horror cinema for decades, beginning with the Bela Lugosi vehicle White Zombie in 1932. Over the following years zombies popped up in movies as one of many monstrous villains, often filling the minion role. It wasn’t until George Romero’s groundbreaking 1968 film Night of the Living Dead that the idea of a zombie apocalypse was introduced. Romero’s cannibalistic zombies have since become the archetype used in countless films, books, and video games. The cause of the virulent plague of the walkin "

"As for Hell Of The Living Dead being the worst zombie movie ever made I was sure I could top that one... The first one that leapt to mind was one I saw several years ago called The Child ... I found this one in my collection and rewatched it and I quickly realized one thing... this is not a bad movie at all! Working with a bare minimum budget and amateur actors working with terrible dialogue from amateur writers, these guys obviously spent all of their money on the few effective gore effects! Still, the overall effect is a rather creepy and suspensful zombie movie that was obviously heavily inspired by NOTLD with a little bit of The Exorcist and The Bad Seed "

"McCain campaign ad on Zombie NationThe John McCain campaign would do well to exclude certain sites from its web ad buy. Maybe the philosophy of "cast a wide net" will pay off. Maybe Mark Penn missed a micro-trend somewhere along the way--conservative Horror fanboys. The ad was probably triggered by the keywords, because the original post was about a photoshop contest on SpoutBlog to turn any of the 2008 presidential candidates into a zombie poster for a new "______ Dead" film. "Night of the Living Dead is one of those movies that is more significant for its influence then for its artistic quality. It was one of the first independent American films to become a hit (sorry, AIP counts as a studio), and it did so without a major distributor, either. It was probably the most graphic horror film ever made up to that point, and is considered by some to be a precursor to the slasher genre. It also directly inspired the seeming thousands of filmmakers who themselves have decided to make a zombie film, with precious few of them any good. Finally, it was one of the first movies that featured a dominant African American male who was not afraid to disagree with whites. It's also, looking at it from a contemporary perspective, pretty by the numbers and melodramatic. The story was old even then – a bunch of diverse characters in conflict with each other are trapped in a safe location, "

"After interviewing George Romero at Sundance 2008, Joe Swanberg and Ronald Bronstein (the interviewers) began to debate whether or not there’s even a place today for subversive directors (i.e. those who defy an institution–Hollywood–while pretending to support it). Romero’s Night of the Living Dead served as a blood and guts zombie vehicle carrying everything troubling him about the turbulent 60’s. The argument today is that subversion is unnecessary. No filmmaker is limited to studio controlled dollars, equipment or theaters to get their ideas out. Although you don’t have to take subversive tactics to get a film made anymore, I think there’s a new institution to game, that of a jaded movie watching audience. For a generation who doesn’t know a world without premium cable channels and DVD shops on every corner, a trailer is shorthand (largely due to uncreati "
