"This blog entry is part of my "movie year countdown round #2". Read more about that here. Mr. Deeds Goes to Town Mr. Frank Capra scores a hat trick with me! This is the third film of his I have seen, and I give all three a perfect score of 10 out of 10. No man can craft a better sappy, emotionally manipulative story that absolutely works for me! There's no mystery to these stories. With this film, It's a Wonderful Life, and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, the stories are clearly about a pure man of innocence and morals in a world that seems to be all against him but reveals itself to be full of many people just as good as him. Why do Capra's movies of this sort work over other formulaic films that attempt the same kinds of sappy stories? Well on one side it's clearly excellence in all of the major aspects of solid movie making of this type. Fantastic writing, filming and editing, and perfect casting and acting, especially for the leads. On the other side, it must be just a ki ... "

"Are you walking around with your “I Voted!” sticker proudly adhered to your chest? If not, get out there and do some lever pulling, chad punching, and ballot dropping. Then take the rest ofthe day off and watch one of these movies that’ll get you through the rest of election day and away from the nail-biting edge of election return coverage. There are a few minor spoilers inside, but don’t view that as me messing with the ballot box. You’ll still love the movies more than CNN’s infographics.

"Thanks to Barack Obama, you’ve possibly had enough inspirational speeches for one year. But if not, go see Milk, and also watch this video, which splices together bits from 40 films including obvious choices like Independence Day, Patton, Braveheart, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and Animal House, as well as surprise additions like Newsies, Swingers and Galaxy Quest. The montage had me at the 7 second mark due to an appearance from Fozzie and friends (from The Great Muppet Caper), but it goes on longer than 2 minutes. "

"Suppose that you're a normal, everyday moviewatcher. You've seen a few documentaries and now I come to you and ask you to make a documentary your own self. "Who, me?" you say, "What do I know about making a documentary?" "Just give it a try," I say, and I say, "David Earnhardt did it. This is his first stab at making one. So, your movie will be about voter fraud, like his was. Here's a camera. Get out there and record some interviews with the sort of folks that you see shopping every day down at the Save N' Go Supermarket. That is, turn up some interesting folks - folks maybe just a tad peculiar in their views and in their aspect. Then Wiki some voter statistics and find some footage of voters standing in line and, I predict, you will make a movie very like Uncounted: The New Math of American Elections.Nothing wrong with that. The movie's karma is positive. It's impossible to take a step these days without tripping over an article on voter problems, so you probably won't learn anyt ... "

10 Best Political Passion Projects

"Oliver Stone has long been synonymous with political passion projects, but his latest film, W., may be his most ambitious effort yet, if only because of how quickly the thing came together and got made. Now the serio-comic biopic about our sitting president is about to hit theaters, less than ten months after anyone had heard of its inception, and it’s getting a number of favorable reviews, will possibly rule the box office this weekend, and could even garner an Oscar nomination for Josh Brolin, who portrays the man with the titular initial, George W. Bush. But not all political passion projects are quite as successful as W. is expected to be. Some such films have been banned, while some have simply failed to acquire an audience on more democratic grounds, whether in terms of box office, critical or awards recognition. Yet regardless of the reception of a political passion project, either at the time of release (or intended release) or decades later, it may be regarded as an achiev ... "

"What's the AFI Project, you ask? For more information, or if you just enjoy my bemused ramblings, read here: http://www.spout.com/blogs/pip pin06/archive/2008/3/1/25756.a spx Mr. Smith Goes to Washington is on the following AFI lists: The Original Top 100 (#29)100 Years...100 Heroes and Villans (Jefferson Smith is the #11 hero)100 Most Inspiring Movies (#5)The Revised Top 100 (#26) Once upon a time, I wanted to be in politics. I majored in political science and had every intention of one day transferring my life to Washington DC. I might not have been a Congresswoman, but I would have been happy to work for a lobbying organization or a think tank or something that put me in close proximity to the machinations of our American democracy. Once upon a time, I was a modern-day, female version of Jefferson Smith (James Stewart). When I first saw this film, my interest in politics had begun to wane, a downward slide that has continued and completed by now. I no longer want to be in ... "

10 Worst Updates of 1930s Classics

"Anticipating the worst from Diane English’s new remake of The Women is not just typical low expectations regarding remakes in general. My dread is specifically based on dissatisfaction with remakes and updates of films from the 1930s, arguably the best decade in cinema (it is certainly my favorite). While I may recognize and appreciate some favorable redos, such as DePalma’s Scarface (of which I’ve never really been a fan), Mazursky’s Down and Out in Beverly Hills and the multiple repeats from Hitchcock, I am more often disappointed with attempts to recreate ‘30s classics, even when I approach them with already low standards. Worst, for me, doesn’t necessarily have to do with the quality of the film alone, especially when related to remakes and updates. The titles and versions I’ve selected are hardly the worst in terms of craft or production value — you’ll note there are no Dracula movies on this li "

"Mr. Smith Goes To Washington is probably the best film ever made about the American political system, and it's one of the few that doesn't say that we are all going to hell and a hand basket. It manages to be both cynical and idealistic, a difficult line to tow. The movie stars Jimmy Stewart in a star making performance as Jefferson Smith, as local hero in an unnamed Western state (I think it supposed to be Oregon) who is chosen by the Governor (Guy Kibbee) as a compromise appointment to fill out the term of a US Senator who has just died. The state's other senator (Claude Rains) wants to make sure that Smith doesn't get in the way of a dam that rich guy in the state (Edward Arnold) wants built for business. But he doesn't count on the fact that the naïve Smith, who has no governmental experience, will have integrity and fight for what's right, even when he knows the cause is hopeless. I am not sure anyone could have made this material work other than Frank Capra. No director ... "

"Government corruption and environmental conservation …two themes that aren’t uncommon in 21st century popular entertainment. This movie, made nearly 70 years ago, was way ahead of its time and still stands up reasonably well. Some details may come across as hokey now, but the overall tone & theme is timeless. "
