Synopsis
Charlie Cheshire is a lifelong resident of Raleigh, North Carolina who inherited some property from his family -- the Midway Plantation, which for many local residents has long been a historic symbol of the Old South and its heritage. However, Charlie decided that as Raleigh was falling victim to urban sprawl, the historic houses of Midway were being crowded out of significance by his neighbors, and he made the decision to uproot the plantation's surviving buildings and relocate them to a more spacious rural setting. However, Charlie's decision unleashed a firestorm of controversy; many members of the Cheshire family were appalled at the notion of the Midway mansion being moved, as were a number of local historians. At the same time, the outcry caused another branch of the Cheshire family to speak their minds -- the descendents of the slaves who were once the property of Midway's owners, and had a far less rosy perspective on the history of the plantation than that being shared by many of Raleigh's citizens. Film critic Godfrey Cheshire is Charlie's cousin and a witness to the outcry over the decision to relocate the Midway properties, and Moving Midway is a documentary directed by Godfrey which chronicles the battle over the fate of the plantation, as well as a rare meeting between two families named Cheshire whose history intersects in a now-painful manner. Moving Midway received its world premiere at the 2007 Full Frame Documentary Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
