"This is the fourth feature length film I've seen by director Vittorio De Sica. I chose to watch this film based on previous good ratings I've given other films by this director and to better my favorite directors by algorithm listing. Una breve vacanza (A Brief Vacation) My previous three film experiences from Vittorio De Sica were from his earlier and probably most acclaimed neo-realism period of the late 40s/early 50s, specifically Shoe-Shine, The Bicycle Thief, and Umberto D. All of them being fantastic, the latter two being perfect masterpieces. Jump a couple decades into the future with this, his second to last film. I'm not sure what a lot of his films in between were like. I suspect some of them may have been a bit livelier since many are billed as comedies, in which case this may have been a bit of a return to form. The beginning of the film seems very familiar setting in a simple and somewhat

"What Hillary might, can, and/or should say, courtesy of the cinema. If she decides the nomination is still worth pursuing, she would do well to rewatch Street Fighter (1994) and take her cue from Jean-Claude Van Damme.Street Fighter re-write:The pundits and party elders say this fight is over, we can all go home... But, we can all go home, meanwhile, ideals like truly universal health care, counting every vote and making history, they get packed up, and we can all go home. Well, I'm not going home. I'm going to get on a plane and I'm going to Denver and I'm going to kick that son-of-a-bitch Barack's ass so hard that the next inexperienced wannabe's gonna feel it. Now who wants to go home and who wants to go with me?Well, maybe not that last part. But you get the point.Original clip:President Clinton is already taking a beating from the pundits who ask "Did Bill kill Hillary's campaign?" The coverage of this campaign has been sensationalized and hyper-scrutinized, and blatantly ... "

"Scary Movie 4It's funny that very rarely to I ever even consider watching the sequel to a horror movie that I consider to be less than really great. In fact I usually don't seek out too many horror movies because I find most of the mediocre. It's funny then that I keep watching this series of fairly mediocre comedy movies that poke fun at those same very mediocre horror series.Actually I can't remember why I ever saw the first Scary Movie. I can't even remember if I saw it at a theater or on DVD. I know I have seen Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood and thought that was amusing (although I was wasted and had no idea what it was at the time) which was made by the same people.I think I found the original Scary Movie to be somewhat amusing, but knew the sequel looked horrible in the previews. Somehow my friend Tom convinced me to go see it with him. I think he even paid for my ticket because no one else would go with ... "

"In the January 14th issue of Time, film critic Richard Corliss eschews reviewing the week's releases (it is January, after all) to instead pontificate on the state of the Oscars ("How to Save the Awards Shows"). As many are wont to do, Corliss offers his suggestion on how to improve the Oscars. He throws out the notions usually bandied about in bids for cheap audience thrills, and suggests something that he considers self-evidently simple: give the awards to popular movies. Now, with all respect to Mr. Corliss, I agree that the Oscars don't have the finest track record for nominations, let alone for awards. But if I may be granted my say, the problem with the list is that it usually slants too commercial. Does anyone really think The Departed was the best picture of 2006? Or Crash the best picture of 2005? Or Million Dollar Baby the best picture of 2004? Or... well, you get the idea.Granted, these are not bad films. (Okay, Crash "

"A powerhouse of masterful filmmaking, with its main strengths lying in its screenplay and performances, visually bolstered by well-polished and high contrast cinematography. I wouldn't say it's a classic, but it is certainly a well-made film at that. "

"I'm not typically a fan of Clint Eastwood's directing. In fact, I generally hate it. It's way too moody, way too brooding, and no one ever seems happy or light-hearted. He depicts the world as being a terrible place where everyone is depressed and messed up. Which may be true, but it makes for a very sobering viewing experience. For example, I hated Million Dollar Baby a lot. It was depressing, annoying, and the entire movie was done in shadows, which pissed me off (however, Morgan Freeman was amazing). While a lot of this was the case for Mystic River, for some reason I found more to like in this movie. It was extremely powerful and intense, and the human stories were very well-done. It was damn near perfect, until the overly extended ending. Though there were some errors before that, too.The opening scenes of the film are extremely disturbing and gut-wrenching. They set the stage for themes of the film as a whole. And they allow Tim Robbins to delve deep i ... "

"Million Dollar Baby I'm thinking mainly of Million Dollar Baby, only because I just saw it, but it seems like all boxing movies are the same movie. There's the training sequence, or montage, the fight montage, the individual training sequence and then, some more sequences and montages.I wasn't blown away by this film, wasn't really impressed, seemed like "Rocky", but with Hillary Swank and slightly more modern clichés. I want to feel for a character, and in this case, a fighter, and I didn't care about her. Maybe it's because I don't like violence, even organized violence, where both individuals consent to the the activity. Maybe I shouldn't like this film, maybe it's not made for me or my demographic, but still, shouldn't I at least care when she gets creamed in the face, or, heck, even dies in the end?She said she boxed because it was the only thing she was good at, and she felt alive while doing it. But I guess I don't have any sympathy for a person who chooses to beat the crap ... "
