"Is romance dead? David Carr seems to think so, at least in American cinema (both Hollywood and “Indiewood,” as he inclusively clarifies). While celebrating the subway station meet-cute from the beginning of Milk, a scene he claims to be of an increasingly rare sort, Carr states that American filmmakers “can do romantic pathology and entropy, but the kind of love for the ages, a big-movie kind of love? Not so much.” If you agree with him, blame the back-to-back Best Picture winners Titanic and Shakespeare in Love for feeding us the kind of romance that’s so cheesy it clogs our arteries and gives us a coronary. Left with a burst heart and a lack of quality Nora Ephron movies, most of us have been cynics when it comes to love stories these past ten years. Yet cynics can still be swept off their feet, and American filmmakers h "

"Danny Boyle’s new crowd-pleasing film Slumdog Millionaire was originally intended to be shot entirely in English, but apparently due to the preferences of a casting director, about a third of the movie is in Hindi. While this fraction may not be enough to call it a foreign-language film, it could have been enough to turn off subtitle-fearing audiences were the movie not so otherwise accessible due to its feel-good, “Hollywood-style” story involving star-crossed romance, destiny and an ultimate “love conquers all” message. Also, the movie breaks free from one off-putting foreign film tradition by following Man on Fire, Night Watch and TV’s Heroes into the realm of non-traditional subtitling. Slumdog received a standing ovation at the Toronto Film Festival, where it won the People’s Choice Awa "

"I get the feeling that director Yann Samuell was attempting to make Amelie noir. Well, he succeeded. This film looks playful, colorful and carefree from a cinematic point of view, but the story belies this perception with two very cruel lead characters who, I believe, are certifiably insane. They are both selfish and not only do they hurt each other throughout their entire lives, but everyone around them, including Julien's father, his wife and children, Sophie's husband...and countless other people. There are moments in the film when you think the two characters have had enough of this mean-spirited teasing and are willing to finally admit to one another that they care deeply for each other, but this proves false. I wasn't sure what to think of the ending - did they really do it? But by that time, I didn't care. Neither of them had any redeeming qualities about their character to MAKE me care. A very grim tale, indeed. "

"This is one my all time favorite movies ever. Please don't let the fact that it's a "foreign" film scare you off. This movie plays like magic. It is about as perfect of a film that I've ever seen. It is funny, heartwarming, thrilling and just plain magical. Watch it!!!!! You won't be disappointed. "
