Denver is the emotional battleground for this story of two mid-20s roommates who are drifting through life, fighting the inevitable end of adolescence. Peter (Michael Weston) is hanging onto college like a life preserver. It’s literally the eve of his last chance to pass the oral exams for his PhD in Philosophy and he’s unprepared. Lucas (Spence Decker) is a college dropout and lead singer in a local rock band. Until now, he’s been content with modest recognition and attention from groupies, but his life is going nowhere and he knows it. But for as much as everyone has been resisting making choices and taking risks, it appears that what they’ve really been waiting for – and needing – is something or someone to push them over the edge. Enter Elizabeth (Katharine Towne), Peter’s high school obsession, who contacts Peter when she suddenly arrives in Denver for her father’s funeral. The resulting repercussions reverberate through Peter and Lucas and all their relationships. Mainly a character piece, the film also has some nice turns by Orlando Jones as a somewhat cryptic local bartender/bookie and Madeline Zima as Peter’s steady but casual squeeze, who becomes aware of Elizabeth’s presence only by chance. Director Mark Piznarski, who has been making a career in television, brings a certain gloss to the project, along with a solid guiding hand for his crew of veteran actors. You may recognize many of them from other work: Michael Weston as the scary psycho kidnapper of Dennis Hall in HBO’s Six Feet Under; Spence Decker as the cult character Kivar in WB’s Roswell; and both Katharine Towne and comic actor Orlando Jones from the Ivan Reitman sci-fi comedy feature.
