"Michael Arndt wrote a sick, genius screenplay. I saw reviews for "Little Miss Sunshine" when the movie came out and passed on it. Whatever the descriptions were, they totally missed it. This is a very funny comedy about failure. Epic failure. "Little Miss Sunshine" was directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, and it stars Greg Kinnear, Alan Arkin, Steve Carell, and Toni Collette, along with others. Arkin won a best supporting actor Oscar for his brief time on the screen, and Arndt won for best original screenplay. I don't know who did the costuming (I assume Nancy Steiner), but the clothes were wonderfully awful, especially little Olive's choices. (Mom's clothes sucked pretty bad, too.) Dinner seems to have been take-home buckets of chicken all too often, given Grandpa's comments. All the details of a harried, wrecked homelife get nailed in the opening scenes. Nobody has time to think about dress or food, much less be good at anything. In this family's life, everything goes h ... " [More]

"Who has even heard of Junior Eurovision??! But to the kids who compete in it, it's the centre of their world. As well as being about the competition, the film is a really interesting look at what life is like for the few kids it focuses on - from Cyprus, Bulgaria, Belgium and Georgia. Their backgrounds are so different but they all have the same passion for singing, and none of them are snotty brats - all just love performing and form strong friendships with the other kids they're competing against. This makes for some really moving scenes, but at the same time, it is genuinely laugh out loud funny! Think along the lines of..... Heavy Load(2008Anvil! "Over the past decade or so, the film community has watched a surge of independent directors make outstanding films that get absolutely no awards recognition except perhaps on the festival circuit. Some of these directors include David Fincher, Darren Aronofsky, Christopher Nolan, and Danny Boyle. Their movies prior to this year's releases expressed their talent significantly, and yet have been largely ignored by most "major" organizations, most notably the Academy and the Golden Globes--however, they have received awards or nominations from several of the other prestigious associations: aside from various critics awards, Christopher Nolan has a DGA nomination under his belt for Memento; Danny Boyle has been praised and awarded multiple times in the UK, most notably the BAFTA awards; David Fincher, apart from critics awards, has won a DGA for commercials (of all things); and Darren Aronofsky has tragically been shut out of all major awards circles. And then there's this year. Ch ... " [More]

"Each day this week, Christopher Campbell will take a look back at a “classic” film that played the Sundance Film Festival. Today’s installment: Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton’s Little Miss Sunshine (2006). If you’ve ever wondered why there are so many big-budget films with all-star casts at Sundance in recent years, here’s why: the Little Miss Sunshine scenario. While this particular film is not the cause nor was it the first studio-like movie to arrive in Park City sans distribution, it is perhaps the most exemplary of a situation that’s currently very familiar at the festival. Sometimes a film can come out the worse for the scenario, as in the case of last year’s What Just Happened? But sometimes it can create a “Cinderella story,” as it did for Little Miss Sunshine. Here’s the gist of it: in past years, Little Miss Sunshine would have easily been set up and produced at a studio, at least at a specialty division. But all the majors passed on it save for Focus Features, which ... " [More]

"Getting ready for the Sundance Film Festival can be very exciting. As we await the event’s Thursday opening, we can’t stop wondering what will be the next big thing. Will this year’s hit be the highly-anticipated Michael Cera project Paper Hearts, or will it be something that we as of yet know nothing about? It’s easy to forget, however, that oftentimes the next big thing is also the next lamest thing. Sundance sensations, those films that are much-buzzed-about, that sell for a lot of money, that go on to be marketed like crazy and ultimately receive Oscar recognition, tend to lend themselves most easily to backlashes. Usually such derision is deserved, as in the case of the following ten films, each of which made a big splash at Sundance despite being bad. 10. Brick (Ria " [More]

"You gotta hand it to Kevin Costner. The one-time pretty boy of the silver screen sure isn't afraid to let it all hang out in his most recent screen roles, sporting mid-life muffin tops around the midriff, allowing his thinning mane to sprout from his noggin like some nest of a crazed blue jay, and wearing each wrinkle on his face with pride. In “Swing Vote” his latest role is that of Bud, a slovenly mess of a man who eschews politics and world issues for a hearty game of foozball and the foamy beverage that shares his name. He's like “comedian” Larry the Cable Guy with half an IQ point. And without the overtly hostile racism and homophobia. It seems the fate of the free world rests in his beer-soaked mitts, as a technical glitch allowed a razor's-edge election to be determined by a single ballot. Is that a chad hanging, or is he just happy to see us?

"Though I first buzzed about an Academy Award nomination for Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight more than a month before his death, I now want to take it all back. I feel all the talk of Ledger’s posthumous Oscar chances will cloud my mind when I finally do see it, and it will probably also cloud the Academy’s judgment, too. Six months from now, when the nominations are announced on January 22 (coincidentally the one-year anniversary of Ledger’s death), if Ledger is not recognized for his role as The Joker, there will surely be an uproar — actually, Hollywood might just up and self-implode. I’m not the only one annoyed by all the Oscar buzz. Terry Gilliam, who directed Ledger in The Brothers Grimm and the upcoming The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, is ca " [More]

"There is a disconnect near the end of "Little Miss Sunshine"-a film ostensibly about learning family is family-where the film moves from the fringes of reality to pure slapstick. This point, in which the family VW "bus" starts driving over sidewalks (among other things) in order to arrive at the beauty contest on time, takes what had been a pseudo-realistic road trip comedy and morphs it into unwelcome and unrealistic slapstick. But let´s back up first. "Little Miss Sunshine" is the name of a kiddie beauty pageant in California. It seems as though Olive, the youngest child of Richard and Sheryl, won second place in a local contest and, as such, gets to compete if the winner is unable to. Obviously, the winner is, so, after hand wringing and an argument, the entire family is on the way. Included are Richard´s heroin stiffing father, a mute-by-choice son and Sheryl´s formerly suicidal brother. Together, they set off for California from New Mexico. Suffice to say, w ... " [More]

"Definitely, Maybe cleverly twists the romantic comedy genre with its memorable set-up. Ryan Reynolds plays Will Hayes, who is about to get divorced from his wife, who is unseen at the beginning of the movie. His daughter Maya, played by Abigail Breslin from Little Miss Sunshine, demands to hear the story of how Will met her mother. He agrees but he creates a challenge for Maya - he will tell the story but he will not use real names so she will have to figure out which character is her mother. It is, Maya says, "a love story mystery". Will has three romantic interests in this film who are very different in personality and style. And yes, one's a blonde, another a brunette and a third a red head. So far, so typical. This film does a nice job though in the way it presents them and it is easy to see why Will could pick any one of the three. Running parallel to the romantic storylines (and often contributing to them) is the story of Will's career. At the start of the movie he is working ... " [More]

"Who are the people who like movies like this? Where are they? Do they actully think these films are funny or is it just that no one wants to admit they aren't into a movie that all the other hip folks have dubbed ultra-cool? Little Miss Sunshine was the hit of 2006 Sundance Film Festival (strike one). It belongs to the despised Clever Comedy genre (stike two). Invented by Wes Anderson, Clever Comedies are films that try to be funny by having every character have some obvious and annoying quirk and that a sort of directoral detachment, where the artist looks back as his/her own characters and indicate how superior they are to find them funny. Little Miss Sunshine is apotheosis of this genre, which in a way is a good thing, because it could mean that people will stop making them. The people in this film are not just quirky, but psycotic, and the film not funny, but disturbing. Through some plot contrivance, they entire Hoover family has to take a van from New Mexico to Califo ... " [More]
