Directed by Park Chan-wook.
A woman looks for both revenge and redemption after spending 13 years in prison in this offbeat thriller from South Korea. Lee Geum-ja (Lee Yeong-ae) was in her early twenties when she was found guilty of kidnapping and killing a young boy, and though she confessed to the crime under duress, while behind bars she dreamed of one day being able to clear her name -- and even the score with the people who railroaded her, including the police officer who brought her in (Nam Il-woo) and Mr. Baek (Choi Min-Sik), a teacher who wronged her in a number of ways. Lee Geun-ja teams up with a number of friends she made during her time in lock-up, including Woo So-yeong (Kim Bu-seon), a thief with a gunsmith for a husband; Oh Su-heui (Ra Mi-ran), who was saved from assault at the hands fellow inmates by Lee; and Preacher Jeon (Kim Byeong-ok), an eccentric man of the cloth who was struck by her gentle nature in jail. As Preacher Jeon helps Lee seek salvation for all she had to do while in prison, her other friends stand by her side as she gets even with her rivals and searches for the daughter she was forced to leave behind when she was convicted. Sympathy for Lady Vengeance (aka Chinjeolhan Geum-ja-ssi) was the third film in a series, preceded by Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, and Old Boy. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

"Oldboy was not bad. Not bad at all. If you can stand a lot of violence, and a general tone of nastiness and some fairly disgusting goings on(including the scene where he eats a live octopus in a single take), than it's actually very good. I've seen only 2 films in this Vengeance Trilogy(they aren't sequels, they just all deal with revenge), this and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance. I enjoyed Lady Vengeance a lot more than Oldboy. Still, recommended, and it's nastiness is much deeper and more meaningful than current torture porn flicks. You should check out Audition, which takes awhile to get going, but is totally worth it. I screamed aloud like a little girl at one point in this movie, and I'm not ashamed to admit it. Just don't watch the trailer, it gives too much away. Pulse, and Cure(both by Kyoshi Kurosawa) are really damn good, but very vague. Still, he grasps the melancholy aspect of ghosts and horror better than any other director I've seen. Of cours ... "i saw real fiction by Kim-Ki Duk and i was not impressed compared to his other works;I guess its because the camerawork onthe movie seemed low budget;Anyway i just did not get the same feel for this movie compared to bad guy, samaritan girl(disturbingly great), the bow(visually great with minimal dialogand lots of symbolism), and 3-iron(quietly original and concientious trespasser that finds romance in a most unusual way)Just saw The Host this evening and i thought it was JUST decently ok.There was some funny parts on the movie that i did not expect; It is interesting though how the family of the girl that was taken by the monster pretty much bonds together to rescue the girl:The family bonds together even with the odds against them;Odds against the govt. that does not believe them or lies to them ,and people that decieve them for reward money; The bravest of the family is the father that would do the craziest, and sometimes the dumbest thing against all odds to rescue his daughter. It ... "Sorry for taking so long to get back to you. Busy lately. I'll try to do better in the future. The only film I've seen so far by Kim-Ki Duk is Bad Guy. I thought it was very interesting but didn't really go where I was hoping. I'll have to rent Samaritan Girl to see how that is.I'm very excited to get The Host on 7/24 especially since they are releasing it on HDDVD. That is an amazing film.I'm not sure why A Bittersweet Life isn't out in America yet. It is such an amazing film. I got it through Ebay. That is where I get alot of films that are not available in America yet. My second favorite Park-chan Wook film is Sympathy for Lady Vengeance. The style, characters and story progression is amazing. Have you seen R-Point? It is a pretty good ghost story. I expected it to be better but it was still pretty good. " [More]

"8 1/2 out of ten stars. Lee Yeoung-ae who is a soap opera star in her native South Korea gives an outstanding performance as a young women imprisoned for a crime she did not necessarily commit. This film shows Park Chan-Wook coming of age in his use of music (damnit where can I get a copy of that exquisite score. . . and yes, I've tried YesAsia and it is sold out, double damnit). And of his shot choice, each scenes seems to meld into the next without a blink of this viewer's eye. The Region Three DVD I rented though was a bit muddy in the darker scenes but it is a slight quibble. The film along with a number of others recently seems to be the start of an avalanche of revenge genre films coming out of South Korea (I wonder what that says!) That said, great overall, though you may be leaving the room during the penultimate scene, where (SPOILER) each of the parents take their revenge on the real murderer. " [More]
