"Note: For clarity of writing, I have decided not to list the actors names with their characters as is my usual custom, principally because the main character is played four performers, and trying to isolate who plays who when would be needlessly confusing for the reader and probably myself.Kundun is the most un-Scorsese of all the Scorsese films. To use a cliché, I would have never thought he would have made had his name not been listed in the credits. Although Kundun is not regarded as one of his better works, this does not mean the picture is bad, only that it steps outside what we generally expect from Scorsese. The film is about neither an obsessive man tormented over a woman, nor Catholic guilt, and certainly not about inter-city gangsters. Rather, it a historical epic in the vein of David Lean, about the youth of the current Dalai Lama. (In case anyone is wondering, "Kundun" is a Tibetian title for the Dalai Lama, which as the wikipedia informs me, literally means "pre ... "
